Well it was a fast start from 15-year-old Victoria Mboko, but she lost five of six games to end the opening set from a nice early lead, landing just 39% of first serves and double faulting five times. Combined with a steady dose of unforced errors, she wasn’t able to take a set from Rebecca Marino.

Onto Tuesday, where we head to the WTA event in Cleveland for a match featuring Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Surprised to see the odds listing this one as a fairly even matchup in terms of odds, considering the surface and first round results.

For starters, while Sorribes Tormo’s game possesses surface versatility (hustle and defence plays everywhere), the slower the surface the better. Using her incredible athleticism and incredible consistency from the baseline, the Spaniard is able to outlast her opposition – and slower surfaces allow her to extend more and more points.

On a hard court, however, her record has been pretty plain, where Sasnovich is on her favourite surface and thrives on the quicker courts that help her keep points short.

On clay, in terms of the matchup, you’d have to favour Sorribes Tormo and her ability to wait out the unforced errors from the Belarussian. On hard courts, that is a little tougher to do – especially considering Sasnovich possesses the requisite power to be able to hit through her defences.

In these conditions, I have it the other way around, with Sasnovich being the better player and deserving to be a favourite.

The other concern here for Sorribes Tormo is the amount of time she spent on court in her first match against Camila Osorio of Colombia (not exactly the best hard-court player out there). Not only did the match go three sets, but it was just about four hours long. For context, it was one of the 10 longest matches in WTA history (in the open era).

Sasnovich on the other hand, ended up looking really strong in the latter stages of her match, beating Krunic 6-1 in the second after she found her rhythm.

Considering the different ways these two reached the second round, I’m going to side with the player that was more convincing and is far less likely to run into fatigue issues as the match progresses.
