Tuesday Tennis Best Bet: WTA Warsaw, Ana Bogdan vs Nuria Parrizas Diaz

Ana Bogdan vs Nuria Parrizas Diaz Best Bet: Tuesday, July 26th
After a strong week in Palermo, Italy that saw her reach the quarterfinals and lead by a set and break before losing in three sets, Nuria Parrizas Diaz looks to build on the form she’s found this week in Warsaw.
Taking on Ana Bogdan, the Spaniard certainly has the chance to do just that, with Bogdan being decent, but certainly not dominant on the red dirt.

Ana Bogdan vs Nuria Parrizas Diaz Preview
In terms of the matchup between these two on the clay, we’ve got a more traditional clay courter in the form of Parrizas Diaz, who employs a much more typical game for the surface, using spin, being solid off both wings and prioritising getting her groundstrokes deep into the court over simply looking to hit winners through the slower courts and her opponent’s defending.
On the other side of the net is the more power-based game of Bogdan, who can certainly find her fair share of winners, but tends to be a bit more erratic as well.
Bogdan has continued to get a bit more respect than deserved more often than not when playing on the clay, and her only two decent results came at a weak 250-level event in Turkey & at a Challenger 125K event in Paris. Her wins in Istanbul? Against two local ITF players in their home country and a completely out-of-form Ana Konjuh.
The wins just haven’t been there on the clay this year, nor is her game style particularly well-suited to the dirt.
Yet she’s a favourite in this matchup. Doesn’t really add up for me.
As for Parrizas Diaz, while she’s battled with her fair share of inconsistency this year, it’s worth noting that even with a few errors sprinkled into her game, she’s still likely the more reliable player in longer rallies. Further, a lot of her problems have come trying to hit six or seven balls with depth without committing an error. With Bogdan not really looking to play extended points, it’s not likely she’ll need to hit that many balls into a small window.
Finally, the fact she can hit with good depth from both wings is also important in this one, as Bogdan doesn’t really know much other than trying to dictate with pace on her groundstrokes. As we know in tennis, the shorter you leave the ball, the more likely your opponent is to find an easy winner. The deeper you hit, the tougher it is to hit it back with pace without committing an error.
The stylistic matchup here greatly favours the Spaniard, and without a weak wing to pick on, Bogdan could be in for a long day.
Ana Bogdan vs Nuria Parrizas Diaz Best Bet
As a result, I’m more than happy to back the underdog in this situation.
We have the player more comfortable on the surface. Her strengths match up well with her opponent’s weakness and she built up some nice form last week and was just a few games away from the semifinal.
For the markets to give her just a 44% likelihood of advancing in this matchup is a bit disrespectful.
