Tuesday Tennis Best Bet: WTA Washington, Tereza Martincova vs Xinyu Wang

Tereza Martincova vs Xinyu Wang Best Bet: Tuesday, August 2nd

After a tough loss in her last tournament in her hometown of Prague, Tereza Martincova looks to continue her preparation for the US Open in Washington, DC, taking on a talented 20-year-old in Xinyu Wang.

This one will be a match of which player can find a way to settle themselves and avoid the unforced errors, as they’re a staple of Wang’s game, while Martincova committed 54 of them in her last match, despite playing a rather clean first set and a half.

Tereza Martincova vs Xinyu Wang Preview

August 2nd, Time TBD

After a rough end to her match against Chloe Paquet in Prague, Martincova is poised for a potential bounceback in her first rounder in the American capital.

She may not be as consistent with her groundstrokes as purely defensive-minded players, but she’s also far from someone that commits about 20 unforced errors a set, as she demonstrated last week.

Further, there’s a strong possibility she won’t even be afforded the chance to commit that many errors. With Wang a very hit-or-miss power player, Martincova won’t need to dictate nearly as much, nor hit nearly as many balls per rally as she did against Paquet.

The matchup suits the Czech well, since she can both deal with pace and effectively play a counter-punching game style, as well as dial up the power on her forehand when necessary to finish points. She’s also a pretty consistent player most of the time, and certainly is the more solid player from the baseline in this one.

It’s also worth noting that despite the talent that Wang has displayed in the past, wins at the top level and against quality opposition have been few and far between during the 2022 season. Her best wins have come against American Ann Li – herself in pretty poor form this season – and Australian Storm Sanders – a decent player, but certainly far from the upper echelons of the women’s game.

Wang’s struggles behind her second serve (both in terms of double faulting and points lost in general) should also suit a well-rounded Martincova well. With Wang averaging nearly 14 break points faced in her last four matches, there’s a strong chance she’ll be under constant pressure.

Finally, with Martincova possessing a much stronger elo rating on hard courts, it’s tough to see what exactly Wang does better here. Unless she all of a sudden finds consistency, control to go with her aggressive style and a second serve, she could be in tough in this match.

Tereza Martincova vs Xinyu Wang Best Bet

While I’m a little apprehensive after the last match she played, Martincova is playing an opponent with an entirely different stylistic makeup here. It’s also worth noting, she experienced an uncharacteristic collapse and was missing at tough-to-replicate levels in the latter stages.

It wouldn’t be wise to let the recency bias cloud one’s judgement and pass on taking a worthwhile and valuable position on this match.
