As the countdown to Wimbledon continues, Tuesday features a matchup in Eastbourne between two veterans who are well-acquainted with grass-court tennis.

Dan Evans and Adrian Mannarino both enjoy playing on the slicker lawns that the month of June brings, though for different reasons.

Oddly enough, neither possesses overwhelming power – as is so often the case with those comfortable on the tour’s least-used surface. Mannarino likes the grass, as it suits his flat hitting, while Evans prefers the lower bounces the courts provide and it makes his backhand slice all the more effective.

Without a real edge in terms of surface comfort, let’s break down the stylistic matchup between these two. With neither possessing a ton of power, both rely on playing “wall” type games from the baseline. That is to say, they’re both excellent at prolonging rallies and avoiding unforced errors.

The patented Evans backhand slice also loses a bit of its effectiveness against a lefty opponent where that shot comes to the forehand in cross-court exchanges and who also likes the lower bounces.

Mannarino also possesses the stronger first serve, which makes me think he’ll find a few more cheaper points than the Brit.

Finally, looking over the statistical matchup, if one looks solely at the last 52 weeks on grass, Evans appears to have the edge. That said, take out Challenger level matches and it’s Mannarino is just about level in hold plus break percentage, hits over twice as many aces, lands more first serves and has the better win percentage.

Given all that, the match seems pretty even. Yet Mannarino is a sizable underdog in this one to Evans, and that leads me to believe there is value in backing the Frenchman to pull off the upset against Evans.

With it being the week prior to Wimbledon and no one is certain where the motivation levels lie, it’s also advisable to be a tad more cautious with regards to staking.

  • Selection: Mannarino to win
  • Odds: 2.70 (Unibet)
  • Stakes: 2/10
