ATP Geneva Best Bet: Bagnis vs Basilashvili
Tuesday, May 17th, 11:00 (UK Time)
As action rolls on in a week with four tour-level events between the ATP and WTA Tours heading into next week’s French Open, the focus shifts from Lyon to Geneva for the best bet of the day.
For Tuesday’s matches on offer, backing Facundo Bagnis as an underdog against the mercurial Nikoloz Basilashvili looks to be a solid bet.
For starters, the 30-year-old Basilashvili hasn’t compiled the most impressive results this clay season. Wins over Ilya Ivashka (from a set down), the equally as enigmatic Fabio Fogini and Dan Evans – who isn’t the most comfortable on the surface – don’t fill one with much confidence. Opposing his wildly erratic play at odds over 2.00 is always going to tempting.
Factor in playing at some altitude, where his erratic nature can be exacerbated by balls travelling more through the air, and it becomes an even more enticing prospect. Besides his title run at Munich a year ago, his clay results at altitude aren’t the most impressive. Since 2018, he’s just 1-4 in main draw action in Madrid, 0-2 in Kitzbuhel’s elevated conditions and 1-1 in Munich (this season, defending his outlier title run in 2021).
As for his opponent, Bagnis seems to be the polar opposite stylistically. A lefty, defensive type player, he is the type that could give Basilashvili fits, by extending rallies and waiting out those unforced errors. His angles and precision off both wings will also be useful in this matchup. Considering the Georgian tends to try and hit through everything, forcing him into positions with very little margin for errors should be advantageous for Bagnis.
Bagnis is also the opposite in terms of playing at altitude. While Basilashvili’s already low-margin game is tested even more in conditions where the ball flies, Bagnis’ game benefits from the thin air, adding a bit more pace where it tends to lack otherwise. He made the quarterfinals this season in Santiago, and claimed the title at the Pereira Challenger. Last season, he managed to reach the Santiago final, the Cordoba semis as a qualifier, the Lyon semis and he won a title at the Salzburg Challenger in an impressive field for a Challenger event.
In a contrast of styles, where the matchup analysis favours the player going off as the underdog, look to more than double your money with Tuesday’s best bet.
