WTA Budapest BEST BET: SIEGEMUND vs KRUNIC

Tuesday, July 12th, Time TBD

For Tuesday’s selection, we look to the 250-level event taking place in Budapest.

It’s a match between two rock-solid baseliners in Laura Siegemund and Aleksandra Krunic, in what could feature some longer, more physical rallies.

There are a few reasons, however, that I’ll be backing the veteran German in this one, over Krunic.

First, there’s the experience factor. Siegemund is through and through a clay-court specialist, and the high-level ITF events, as well as some of these lower-tier events on the main tour with weaker fields, are where she thrives. She’s played upwards of 600 matches in her professional career on the dirt and is more comfortable than her Serbian counterpart on the red dirt.

Additionally, she’s been in strong form, playing some ITF events in Austria and Germany the last few weeks. She took down a W25 event in Annenheim, Austria without dropping a set, and then won a W60 event in Portschach, dropping just one. She lost in the second round at the W100 in Versmold in three sets to one of Germany’s top prospects in the women’s game, but she’s certainly acclimated well to the red dirt.

Krunic, on the other hand, has spent time relatively evenly in her career between the clay and hard courts, but stylistically, she plays a crafty game and slices well. She prefers lower-bouncing surfaces, where her tactics are more effective. While she’s competent on clay courts, she’s much less comfortable on them than her opposition in this one.

Krunic has also struggled to find wins consistently on the clay, with all six of her victories coming at the French Open (in qualifying and in the first round against a poor clay-court player in Kamilla Rakhimova) and in the non-WTA-affiliated German Bundesliga in 2022.

The difference in quality between the two on the red clay is illustrated by the 80-point lead in clay court elo ratings that the more experienced German has.

I’ll go ahead and back Siegemund at a relatively low handicap in Budapest on Tuesday.

  • Selection: Siegemund -3 games
  • Odds: 1.91 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 3/10
