WTA Nottingham Best Bet: Golubic vs Watson

Wednesday, June 8th, 15:00 UK Time

For Wednesday’s women’s selection, it’s one of the featured matches later on in the day, as Brit Heather Watson takes on Viktorija Golubic in a second-round matchup.

The Swiss will be looking to avenge a three-set loss on the surface from a year ago in Birmingham – a match that saw her leading 6-3, before falling apart and winning just four games the rest of the way.

Her chances appear to be decent for a few reasons.

First, her game is even more well-suited to the grass than Watson’s. Her very flat hitting and redirection of pace are ideal given the conditions. Her one-handed backhand is the nicest on the WTA Tour for my money and when she takes it early and deprives her opponents of time to reach the ball, it’s an excellent weapon.

Watson may not have an overwhelmingly powerful game, but when she’s at her best, she can dictate. Golubic is excellent at using her opponent’s power against them. She’s quick to line up her shots and is seldom late, which helps her avoid errors. That ability was on display last year at Wimbledon, where the 29-year-old managed to make the quarterfinals, beating some serious heavy-hitters like Madison Keys, Danielle Collins and (to a lesser extent) Veronika Kudermetova.

Watson possesses the experience on the surface, but she’s had trouble finding ways through the better players on tour historically. With a win percentage just above 33% for her career on grass against the top-50 (Golubic comes in at 55th in the rankings, but certainly has top-50 quality on the grass), it’s tough to trust her in these matchups. Being 2-8 against this type of opponent in her last 10 chances also indicated that the progression just hasn’t been there.

Considering the stylistic edge here for Golubic, Watson’s lack of an overwhelming weapon to find ways through the Swiss, and Watson’s vulnerable second serve (she’s won fewer than 42% of second serve points on grass over the last 52 weeks), this handicap should be closer to -3.5 or -4 games than -3.

  • Selection: Golubic -3 games
  • Odds: 1.90 (Marathon Bet)
  • Stakes: 3/10
