Veronika Kudermetova vs Kayla day Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Expert Tip: Kudermetova Comes Out on Top

Veronika Kudermetova vs Kayla Day (Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis): Wednesday, September 27th
No dice for Jodie Burrage, who had the chance to serve out the second set twice to extend the match and failed on both occasions. She was one of many favourites that fell on Tuesday in Ningbo.
For Wednesday’s WTA tip, we’re off to the Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis in Tokyo, Japan, where it’s Veronika Kudermetova vs Kayla Day.

Veronika Kudermetova Expert Tip
Not going to overthink this one too much. These two are simply in different tiers when it comes to quality. Despite Kudermetova’s struggles this summer, she’s still an established tour-level professional that has had a cold patch, but most of those losses have come to quality opposition.
Day hasn’t really beaten anyone of note yet during the hard-court summer and has really struggled to prove she belongs on the WTA Tour rather than the lower ITF circuit.
Expert Tip: Kudermetova -3.5 Games at 1.83 with Bet365, using 3/10 stakes.

Veronika Kudermetova Recent Form
The form in North America wasn’t that strong for the Russian. She won just two matches between Cincinnati and Guadalajara, playing five events in that span. Some of that was certainly down to her own struggles, but drawing players like Sofia Kenin (who has re-found her own strong play lately), Bernard Pera and Victoria Azarenka relatively early on in the draws also meant there was a bit of misfortune mixed in there as well.
The 26-year-old could certainly use some decent showings this autumn, as she’s still part of the top-20 in the world for now, but will be dropping some points in the coming weeks.
This should be a good matchup for her to find another win in Tokyo. She reached the semifinals here last year and has already picked up a win against Harriet Dart – a player who may not be among the world’s best, but in these conditions could certainly trouble some bigger names.
The serve and forehand will be an advantage here for Kudermetova, along with her superior play at the net.
If she can avoid unforced errors, it’s hard to really construct a path to victory for Day.
Kayla day Toray Recent Form
Since qualifying for and reaching the third round of the French Open, and then winning an ITF title in Canada, Day has reverted to struggling when trying to make the jump up to the main circuit.
She won four matches during the hard court summer swing when trying to play WTA Tour events and none of the players she beat are currently inside the top-150 rankings wise. Only one is inside the top-200 at the moment.
Even her opening win this week was against Moyuka Uchijima – currently ranked 160th and in the event thanks to receiving a wild card.
Day doesn’t really have any weapons on the court and will likely look to prolong rallies and wait for Kudermetova unforced errors. It’s hard to imagine her not being under sustained pressure on serve as well.
Veronika Kudermetova vs Kayla day Toray H2H – Stat of the Match
These two played back in 2016 on clay with Day emerging victorious. With Kudermetova now being among the world’s top-20, I think it’s fair to say that match when she was a teenager shouldn’t really be all that meaningful.
I think the most indicative metric that comes to mind when evaluating this matchup is the American’s record against the world’s top-100.
As I mentioned earlier, we haven’t seen much promise from Day above the ITF Tour and a 2-6 record in the last year against top-100 players and 8-22 mark in her career would certainly seem to indicate she’s far from being ready to contend at this level and against players like Kudermetova.
