It’s onto the second round from Flushing Meadows, after the opening 128 matches wreaked absolute havoc on the draw, with the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz bowing out for the men, while Simona Halep and Elena Rybakina were both shown the exits in the women’s draw.
For Wednesday’s selection from the men’s second play, it’s the man that took Tsitsipas out, Daniel Elahi Galan, taking on Jordan Thompson, who recovered from two sets down against Lorenzo Sonego to progress in five.

Two massive first-round wins for these two gentlemen for those differing reasons. One massive comeback, another taking down a top-five player – and both as underdogs – means one of them has an incredible chance to reach the third round and collect the prize money and rankings points associated with doing so.
This one should be a close affair. With both having plenty to fight for as guys having played mostly on the Challenger Tour of late, motivation won’t be a factor.
Matchup-wise though, these two also profile well to send this match over. Thompson is a tricky player, who is strong at punching pace back quickly at his opponents, redirecting pace and using variety to annoy his opposition.
Galan, on the other hand, plays an aggressive game style, with a forehand that is a legitimate weapon – and the primary reason he’s able to translate his success from clay courts to hards.
With this kind of stylistic contrast, the likelihood each is able to execute their gameplan for a set and ensure this one goes past the minimum of three sets is high.
With a close talent matchup, contrasting styles and both men coming off emotional highs and just as likely to be motivated to keep it going, I’m anticipating a rather lengthy, close contest between the Australian veteran and his Colombian counterpart.
I’m willing to stake out a position on the over, as well as a position on the underdog here, who’s close in talent and more experienced on the surface.
