ATP Hamburg Best Bet: Griekspoor vs Coric

Wednesday, July 20th, 10:00 (UK Time)

A disappointing result from Diego Schwartzman on Tuesday, but we’ll stick with the 500-level event in Hamburg for Wednesday’s selection with second-round action commencing.

It’ll be the surging Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, taking on Borna Coric first up on Court M1, and I’ll be looking to back him to keep his fine run of form going.

The world No. 47 has been incredible on clay since the 2021 season, with his serve and power being able to hit through the surface, and the slower red clay affording him more time to set up his shots from the baseline – helping reduce his unforced error count.

Now 6-0 on the tour (9-0 if you count his three German Bundesliga club wins) since Wimbledon and resuming play on the dirt, Griekspoor is coming off another title run in his home country at the Amersfoort Challenger, as well as a win against French Open quarterfinalist Holger Rune in the first round.

While the potential fatigue is certainly lingering in the back of my mind (and keeps this from being an even larger bet than it is), the number of matches played recently also speaks to his incredible level and talent on the surface.

Coric, on the other hand, is still working his way back into top form from a lengthy injury and all but two of his nine wins on the clay this season have come at the Challenger level.

One of those two wins – his first-round victory against Serbian Laslo Djere – was more about his opponent fumbling away a win from a dominant position (Djere led Coric 6-1, *4-2 40-15 and was five points from victory before stumbling the rest of the way).

Without any major weapons, Coric will need his athleticism and consistency to be at their absolute best to deal with the firepower coming from the other side of the net.

I’m usually cautious about backing players off of long weeks, but this is a terrific spot for the 26-year-old from the Netherlands, especially considering he also holds a 60-point lead in clay-court elo ratings.

  • Selection: Griekspoor to Win
  • Odds: 1.91 (William Hill)
  • Stakes: 4/10
