ATP London Best Bet: Cilic vs Bublik

Wednesday, June 15th, 16:30 UK Time

Wednesday from Queen’s Club in London should provide some fantastic tennis – especially with Marin Cilic and Alexander Bublik squaring off in a second-round tilt.

Much like the Shelby Rogers vs Sorana Cirstea match from Tuesday, this one should feature some explosive serving and hitting from the baseline. Throw in Bublik’s well-known antics and touch at the net, and this matchup has it all.

As for the bet itself, I’m going to go with games handicap here with the underdog from Kazakhstan.

Happy to be done with the clay, Bublik moves to a surface where his serve and big groundstrokes can thrive and his soft touch at the net is also an effective way to win points.

He’s in pretty decent form to open grass season as well, and with his booming serve and Cilic not being the best returner, to be getting three games here on the handicap is a position I really like.

With Bublik holding at a rate of over 87% in the last 52 weeks on the surface and winning nearly 80% of his first serve points and well over 50% behind his second serves, it’s a tall task for anyone to break his serve, let alone Cilic, who’s lack of movement and more serve-oriented game will make it that much tougher.

With a win over a good grass courter in Denis Kudla and his lone loss coming to a resurgent Andy Murray (whose return abilities are vastly superior to those of his opponent in the second round), Bublik has shown he’s more than capable of keeping things in this one close and potentially even winning the match outright.

If you go back to last year and look at how Cilic was able to return on the grass against some of the bigger servers with a solid rate when it comes to holding serve, you can see in matches against the likes of Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov, Daniil Medvedev and Benjamin Bonzi, Cilic broke at a rate under 20% in those matches and played plenty of close sets.

With very little separating these two, decent form from both and Bublik being a bit better at the net and even on return for me, I’ll gladly take the three-game head start.

  • Selection: Bublik +2.5 games
  • Odds: 2.02(Marathonbet)
  • Stakes: 2/10
