For our men’s selection, it’s the lone North American tournament of the week at the top level that takes centre stage.
The Hall Of Fame Open from Newport in the United States brings us a tasty clash between one of the best young guns in the sport in Felix Auger Aliassime and the one-time top junior who’s in scintillating form, Jason Kubler.
While the big-serving Canadian certainly deserves to be the favourite in this matchup, I’m still keen on opposing him on the handicap for a few reasons.
First, even though the 21-year-old has improved this season on return, he’s still lacking in that department for my money and he’s covered a handicap of 3.5 games as a favourite just twice in seven matches as a favourite. With the way Kubler has been serving (more on that in a minute) on grass, that’s a sizable head start.
As for Kubler, with his athleticism and ability to apply pressure when on return, he’s especially tough if serving well – and serving well, he is.
The Aussie has had a terrific grass season from that standpoint. His ace rate sits at over 8% on the year (up 1% over his career average on the surface). He’s also upped his first and second serves won percentage as well, winning over 77% behind his first (up over three percentage points) and 54% on second (up over 5%). That’s all led to his service hold rate reaching 88% in 2022 – a full seven points better than his career average on the grass.
Equipped with an improved serve, in terrific form and possessing a strong enough return game to potentially trouble even Auger Aliassime’s serve, I’m going to go ahead and take the 3.5 games on offer to start the match backing the Aussie.
