WTA Rabat Best Bet: Sherif vs Liu

Wednesday, May 18th, 12:15 (UK Time)

After a string of best bet selections that have come from the ATP Tour over the last week and a half, the first from the WTA comes from the 250-level event in Rabat, Morocco.

Wednesday’s selection is to back Mayar Sherif to beat Claire Liu.

While both women are in excellent form, there are a few reasons to back the Egyptian over Liu. First, and most importantly, is the price. All things considered, to have Sherif as the underdog in this matchup seems disrespectful. With both women coming off dominant wins at Challenger events last week and clearly comfortable on the clay, a few things stand out.

When looking at a pair of women coming off long weeks and having played a match now this week, the potential for fatigue is certainly something to consider. Looking back at their title runs last week, Sherif was on the court for longer than 90 minutes just once and was off the court in swift fashion yet again in the first round in Rabat. Liu, on the other hand, played longer than 90 minutes in four of her five matches last week and did so again in the first round in Morocco. The fact that Sherif was more dominant, despite a tougher path to her title also means that if either of these women should be a short favourite, it’s her.

The history on the red clay also favours Sherif, as much of Liu’s success has been amassed on the quicker har-tru green clay, commonly found at American clay events. Since August of 2021, Sherif has won three WTA 125K Challenger events, made the final of a 250 in Romania and reached the semifinal of a fourth Challenger in Buenos Aires. Liu’s win in Paris a week ago was her first at the 125K level and best result to date on the slower red clay.

In what could be a close match, between two in-form players with very similar statistical numbers over the last year (Sherif’s hold percentage plus break percentage lead Liu by about one per cent), the favourite in the betting markets should be the player who has been more dominant, has a longer history of success on the surface, and who spent less time on court last week. That isn’t the case in this matchup.
