After a rough start to the grass season, Greet Minnen finally found a win in the opening round in Bad Homburg against Misaki Doi.

Considering her game and track record, it’s been somewhat surprising that the Belgian has struggled prior to this week on a surface that rewards big serving, hitting and flatter groundstrokes.

Minnen has the ability to find plenty of cheap points with that serve and her forehand can pack a punch and help find her quick points as well.

On quicker surfaces, Minnen can be a really tough out.

Her opponent, Sabine Lisicki, also prefers playing on faster surfaces, but there are a few things that have me leaning towards her opponent in this match.

First, Lisicki is still just a few events into a return to the tour after a prolonged absence. Her best win to this point on the season was her first-round victory against Tamara Korpatsch – who is no grass-court specialist – in a close two-set encounter.

Her other wins have come against a host of ITF-level opposition.

I’m not convinced that Lisicki is ready to take down players of Minnen’s calibre just yet.

The other issue is that her serve is much more volatile than Minnen’s. While she also finds a lot of cheap points from her first serve, Lisicki lands it under 55% of the time in the vast majority of her matches, hits double faults at a relatively high rate and struggles to win many points behind her second serve.

I’ll gladly side with the player that is a bit more reliable and consistent on serve, while also possessing the power to compete and create winners on the quicker surface in this one.

  • Selection: Minnen -2.5 games
  • Odds: 1.91 (Marathon Bet)
  • Stakes: 2/10

Odds are valid as of 09:00 am on 22nd June 2022. Odds may now differ.
