A nice win with Brenda Fruhvirtova on Tuesday to finally get us on the board for the week. The backhand mismatch was even greater than I had anticipated, and as expected, without a real weapon to hurt the young gun, Maria Carle simply could not keep pace.
Onto Wednesday, where another match stands out as the best value on the board from Montevideo, as Eva Vedder takes on Marcela Zacarias.

To say I’m somewhat surprised to see Vedder as a small favourite to toss up in the betting markets would be….an understatement.
Considering the 23-year-old is far more comfortable on the clay courts, and the fact that Zacarias plays a very passive game that Vedder is well suited to exploit, I have her as a rather large favourite in this matchup on Wednesday.
The Mexican journeywoman has played just a single match on the dirt since June, winning a total of two games last week against Panna Udvardy in Buenos Aires. She’s just 3-9 on the season and has lost to players far worse than Vedder – oftentimes by a lopsided margin.
On the flip side, the up-and-coming Vedder is on her best surface, having won 12 times more matches on clay this year than her counterpart in this one and having racked up wins against players like Danka Kovinic, Brenda Fruhvirtova, Rebekah Masarova and Clara Burel since early September.
She’s got a strong forehand that can be played with topspin in longer rallies, but can also inject pace from that wing when a ball is left short and she has the chance to move in and attack it.
I’m having a tough time seeing what the market likes enough about Zacarias in this matchup to warrant a price of 1.90 on the Dutchwoman.

Most of the time in trying to find poor prices in the betting markets, we’re looking to exploit overreactions or the lack of awareness with some relatively new players that give us an edge over the market.
Every so often, however, we’re able to find prices like these that simply have no rhyme or reason to them.
There is no sure thing in this industry, but I will say, I’m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth and am happy to back Vedder to win this one.
Had there been a hint of fatigue or injury issues entering the match, perhaps this would make a tad bit more sense. Considering Vedder was given a local in qualifying and beat her in 51 minutes losing just one game and has since had a day off, neither of those narratives make any sense.
