Tuesday Tennis Best Bet: WTA Miami, Yulia Putintseva vs Rebecca Marino

Yulia Putintseva vs Rebecca Marino Best Bet: Tuesday, March 21st
Well Kaja Juvan is playing at a level that may not cut it at the ITF level – and considering her ranking, that’s where she may be playing in the near future.
Onto Tuesday, where we’ll see if we can snap this funk when we look at the match between Yulia Putintseva vs Rebecca Marino.
In this article:
Yulia Putintseva vs Rebecca Marino Preview
March 21st, TBD
Another week, another tough draw for the tall, big-hitting Canadian. Much like we saw in Doha (where she drew Daria Kasatkina) and Indian Wells (where she was matched up with Marketa Vondrousova), Marino has to once again contend with an incredibly consistent baseliner that can move her around and exploit her lack of foot speed.
Putintseva is an incredible grinder, who is no stranger to long rallies and long matches. The Kazakh is a solid top-50 player, who has struggled a bit this year, but her losses have come almost exclusively against players with top-20 abilities.
Consider the fact that of her eight losses in 2023, six of them have come against the likes of Belinda Bencic, Iga Swiatek, Karolina Pliskova, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Petra Kvitova and Karolina Muchova. Those are all current, or former, top-20 players.
Marino is a long way from having the talent of any of them, and her strengths (a big first serve and forehand) are negated by the slower court speeds and the humidity in the air that slows things down.
What’s worse, the tall Canadian isn’t the most durable player, and the heat and humidity of Miami could be big issues for her.
She’s only played the event twice, never having won a main draw match and losing two incredibly lopsided sets last year in the first round against Katerina Siniakova after having won the opening set.
With the courts and conditions playing relatively slowly, along with the fact that she’s lost several matches by a wide margin this season to players who are of a similar profile to Putintseva, I think the 28-year-old Kazakh should be a much larger favourite here.
Yulia Putintseva vs Rebecca Marino Best Bet
As I have in previous articles, I’m happy to oppose Marino again here.
We once again have an opponent that puts a lot of balls in play and works the ball around the court well. Coupled with slower courts, someone without great stamina or movement like Marino is in for a long day.
Only giving up a 2.5-game head start is fine by me.
