The best football league in Japan gathers the most famous football clubs from all the islands. It got its alternative name, “Meji Yasuda”, due to sponsorship phenomena and is the top professional league in this country. Before the foundation of the professional league (1992), this league was active as an amateur competition.
Still, the period of around 30 years was more than enough for it to gain big popularity, be it among Japanese fans or from some fans from other parts of the world. The Japan J1 features lots of talented and superstar players.
The same goes for some big clubs that were part of many big tournaments and competitions, such as the Super Cup contest. For these reasons, we decided to show you the true colours of this league by encompassing all the key details about it as well as providing you with some betting tips you will hopefully find interesting.

The Japan J1 League changed its format several times during its existence. The latest format it got was set back in 2017. The league officials decided to change it as a result of the hardcore fans’ dissatisfaction with the previous format.
Now, there’s a total of 18 teams in this league. All the clubs play two matches with all the other teams in the league, one as a home and the other as an away team. The club that wins the most points wins the league.
The two teams ranking at the bottom of the table undergo relegation and join the second Japanese league. The 16th-ranking club enters the playoff stage with the Japanese J2 League contestant. If the J1 team wins the playoffs, it stays in this league.
If it happens to lose, it gets relegated to J2 League. On the other hand, in the event that a team from the J2 League wins the playoff stage, it gets promoted to the J1 League. If the same club loses in the playoffs, it stays in the Japan J2 League.
The Japan J1 League 2025 season starts on 14 February this year. With 18 teams, there will be a total of 34 rounds played until the end of the season.
According to the schedule, the season ends on 6 December 2025. Some of the very famous clubs, like Kashima Antlers, Yokohama F. Marinos, Urawa Reds, Nagoya Grampus, and Gamba Osaka, are participating in this season of the Japan J1 League.
