What is the Super Bowl?

The Super Bowl is an annual American Football match with the winner becoming crowned champions of the National Football League (NFL).

Despite the NFL’s formation in 1920, the first Super Bowl wasn’t played until 1967. Initially, the winners of the NFL played the champions of the American Football League (AFL).

After the two leagues merged in 1970, the winners of the National Football Conference and American Football Conference faced off in the Super Bowl.

When is the Super Bowl?

This season, the Super Bowl will be played on February 13th in Los Angeles, kicking off at 3:30 pm local time and 00:30 am central European time.

Which teams are playing at Super Bowl 56?

The Los Angeles Rams will play the Cincinnati Bengals at the SoFi Stadium in California in Super Bowl 56. Entering the game, the Rams are favoured by 4.5 points, at odds of 1.47 to win the game, while the Bengals are at odds of 2.75. The points total is set at 48.5 points.

NFC Champions – Los Angeles Rams

The Rams won the NFC West with a 12-5 record placing them 4th in NFC seeding heading into the playoffs. LA crushed divisional rivals Arizona in the opening round of the playoffs 34-11 before eliminating defending Super Bowl champions Tampa Bay in a thrilling divisional matchup in Tampa 30-27. Hosting the NFC championship game, the Rams overcame a 10 point deficit to defeat San Francisco 20-17.

This will be the Rams’ second Super Bowl appearance in four years. Their last was a loss to New England in Super Bowl 53. Super Bowl 56 will be the Rams fifth Super Bowl with the team’s only Super Bowl victory a victory over Tennessee in Super Bowl 34.

What are the most popular Super Bowl betting markets?

For Super Bowl 56 wagering, bettors can select from several markets. Below is our guide on some of the most popular markets on how to bet on the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl money line:  With a money line bet, you are selecting the outright winner of the contest. In this case, bettors can either select the LA Rams to win with odds of 1.47, or the Bengals to win at odds of 2.75. Note that overtime is included in moneyline bets.

Super Bowl betting line: Handicap betting on the Super Bowl gives one team a head start on points. For example, as the Rams are considered the favourites, bettors can give them a -4.5 points handicap to start the game. If you bet on the Rams at -4.5 points, the Rams must win by 5 points or more for your bet to be a winner.

Alternatively, players can choose to give the Bengals a +4.5 points head start. If you bet on Cincinnati at +4.5 points they must either win the game outright or lose by 4 points or fewer.

Super Bowl over under points total: The points total market give bettors the chance to wager on the teams combining for more or less than a set number of points.

Currently, the over under line for Super Bowl 56 is 48.5 points. You can bet on the total being 49 points or more (betting the ‘Over’) or on the total points scored to be 48 points or fewer (betting the ‘Under’).

First Touchdown Scorer: Bettors have the chance to pick the player to score the first touchdown in the match. Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp is the current favourite to score the first touchdown at odds of 5.00.

Anytime Touchdown Scorer: Simply select a player to score a touchdown at any time in the game. Currently, Cooper Kupp is at odds of 1.61 to score a touchdown at any time during Super Bowl 56.

Other popular Super Bowl betting markets

In addition to some of the popular markets above, bettors can select a host of other options.

1st half moneyline, handicap, over under points total: Rather than selecting entire match moneylines and handicaps, bettors can also choose these for each half.

Spreads and under/over amounts are lowered to factor in the time period. For example, the 1st half handicap for the Rams is currently -3 points while their odds to lead at halftime are 1.58. The 1st half points total is over under 23.5 points.

Halftime – Fulltime result: Bettors can select a team to lead at halftime and a team to lead at fulltime. This can mean betting on the same team to lead at the end of both periods, or you can select one team to lead at halftime and another at fulltime. For example, at time of writing, the odds for Cincinnati to lead at halftime and the Rams to win the game are 6.50.

Moneyline combined with points total over under: The chance to select the match winner along with an under/over points total for a team. For this fixture, a bettor could choose the Bengals to win and the total score to finish under 48.5 points for 4.33 odds.

Handicap combined with points total over under: Bettors can select one team to cover the game betting line in combination with the points total. For example, you can bet on the Rams to cover the 4.5 point line and the game to go over 48.5 points.

Over Under total yards: Over/under bets can be placed on the total yards gained by each team or in total throughout the game. Bettors can select over or under total combined yards, total combined passing yards or total combined rushing yards. Bettors can also bet on the yards gained by each team individually.

Over Under total touchdowns: Over/under total touchdowns scored per team can be selected. For example, bettors can select either team to score under or over a given number of touchdowns or over under the total number of touchdowns scored by both teams combined.

How to bet on Super Bowl MVP winner

In addition to the common markets for Super Bowl 56, bettors can wager on the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The MVP is the best performing player in the match. The winner of the Super Bowl MVP is selected by 16 football writers and broadcasters and over the last 20 years fans have been able to vote over the internet. The writer and broadcaster ballots count for 80 percent of the total vote with the fan ballots counting for 20 percent.

Rams’ quarterback Matthew Stafford is the favourite to be the MVP with odds of 2,0. Likewise, Bengals’ quarterback Joe Burrow has some of the shortest odds to be MVP at 3.75.

Below are the top nine players in Super Bowl 56 MVP betting.

PLAYERODDS TO WIN MVP
M Stafford (Rams QB)2.00
J Burrow (Bengals QB)3.25
C Kupp (Rams WR)7.00
A Donald (Rams DL)15.00
O Beckham (Rams WR)23.00
J Chase (Bengals WR)23.00
J Mixon (Bengals RB)34.00
C Akers (Rams RB)41.00
V Miller (Rams LB)41.00

What is a Super Bowl Bet Builder?

Rather than selecting one bet for the Super Bowl, bettors can select multiple options. This is called a ‘Bet Builder’. Bettors can choose different outcomes and place one overall wager instead of multiple smaller wagers.

Bet365 has a range of bet builder options. The bookmaker offers their pre-selected, popular bet builders, or bettors can select their own. The create your own Super Bowl Bet Builder, log into your bet365 account. Go to the Super Bowl odds market and select the Bet Builder tab.

For example, the following Bet Builder is paying odds of 71.0 at bet365 at time of writing:

  • Rams to win
  • Total points over 48.5 points
  • Cooper Kupp to score a touchdown
  • Ja’Marr Chase to score a touchdown
  • Over 6.5 total touchdowns scored
  • Over 4.5 total field goals scored

If I bet £10 on this Bet Builder and each outcome occurs I would win £700 plus the return of my £10.

History of Super Bowl Odds

Below we have listed the odds for each Super Bowl from the first Super Bowl that saw the Green Bay Packers of the NFL defeat the Kansas City Chiefs then of the AFL by the score of 35-10, entering the game as 14 point favourites.

Despite it being the championship game of the NFL, 14 of the previous 55 Super Bowls have seen a favourite start the game as a favourite of at least 10 points. However there has not been a favourite of double digits in the Super Bowl since the undefeated Patriots lost to the Giants in Super Bowl 42.

Favourites have covered the betting line in 29 of 55 Super Bowls played for a 52.7% win rate . Underdogs have covered in 24 Super Bowls with the game ending on the margin for a push twice.

The last three Super Bowls each finished under the points total with last season’s game between Tampa Bay and Kansas City finishing 15 points under. Over the 55 Super Bowls played, the under has hit on 28 occasions, just under 51%.
