Spain, La Liga, Friday, March 5th, 20:00 (UK)
After three wins from their last five, including victories against Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad, Sevilla have given themselves an eight point gap away from the relegation zone.
Although those wins were at home, they’ve improved their away form of late, too. A 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano stands out, although a point away at the Mestalla isn’t always possible for many clubs.
A narrow 1-0 loss to Real Madrid followed at the Bernabeu, with former player Sergio Ramos stepping up for his new club, making Sevilla hard to break down.
Sevilla may only need a goal to win this, and having just put three past Real Sociedad, confidence will be high.
Their opponents, on the other hand, have yet to reach double digits after 27 matches in what has been a bitterly disappointing campaign. Almeria’s last victory was October – and even that came against CF Talavera in the Copa Del Rey.
However, in recent weeks they’ve managed to secure a few points. It’s all a little too late, but it’s slightly influenced my tip. Sevilla are odds-against to win, but with the added protection of the Asian handicap, they are still at a great price to pick up another three points and cement their La Liga status.
With Sevilla tightening their defence, I’m surprised to see this selection priced at 2.0. Opting for a back five, which includes Sergio Ramos and Loic Bade, has impressed in recent weeks.
In fact, the defence has only been breached three times in their last five matches, which includes two clean sheets – and they were close to another in their narrow 1-0 loss to Real Madrid.
Until their 2-2 draw with Atletico Madrid, Almeria has failed to score in their last four matches. In fact, three of those finished 0-0. It’s the fans you feel for the most.
Luka Romero, on loan from AC Milan, was responsible for the brace, but if Ramos and Bade can keep him quiet, it’s hard to see exactly where their goals are going to come from.
Sevilla’s five-man defence should be able to keep them at arm’s length throughout the 90, with them having scored just 12 goals at home all season,
There’s no surprise to see me turn towards Sevilla’s top goalscorer, but his first half brace was very impressive in their 3-2 win over Real Sociedad.
Admittedly, these were his first goals after three matches, but a previous brace on the road against Rayo Vallecano shows that was just a minor blip.
Plus, it’s worth pointing out trips to the Bernabeu and Mestalla aren’t the easiest places to go and get multiple opportunities in front of goal.
Sevilla won the reverse leg 5-1 back in September, and it was Youssef En Nesyri who opened the scoring that day as well.
With his confidence still evident there and returning to much calmer waters, expect the Moroccan to get on the scoresheet and deliver the three points.
Almeria vs Sevilla Prediction odds via bet365 as at 15:00, March 5th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Almeria’s Bruno Langa received a straight red card last time out in their 1-0 defeat to Celta Vigo, and will therefore be suspended for their clash vs Sevilla. There are no fresh injury concerns, with both Luis Suarez and Ibrahima Kone still recovering from foot injuries.
Sevilla will still be without Marcos Acuna who has a thigh injury, while Erik Lamela has yet to recover from his muscle injury and won’t be back with the squad just yet.
Almeria possible starting lineup: Maximiano; Centelles Plaza, Radovanovic, Gonzalez, Pubill, Baba, Rovertone, Embarba, Viera, Romero, Lozano
Sevilla possible starting lineup: Nyland; Pedrosa, Salas, Ramos, Bade, Navas, Mejbri, Soumare, Torres, Romero, En Nesyri
