The Emirates is the venue for what could prove to be a season-defining game and we’ve got Arsenal Manchester United bet builder tips at the ready.
Victory for Mikel Arteta’s side will move them 11 points clear of United, with a game in hand.
It could have been oh so different though if the visitors could have held onto their slender lead in midweek. Erik Ten Hag will have to re-motivate his side after a topsy-turvy few days.
In this article:
Sunday, January 23, 16:30 (UK)
Manchester United’s winning run of nine games ground to a halt at Selhurst Park on Wednesday evening.
The first time since the re-start that the Red Devils have dropped points, and it has put a huge dent in their title hopes as they looked to bludgeon their way into contention.
Ten Hag’s side looked to be moving within six points of Arsenal at the helm of the division.
However, their evening turned sour in injury time, as Micheal Olise whipped in an outrageously good freekick in the first minute of stoppage time.
At 1-0, the inclusion of Casemiro looked like a masterstroke as the midfielder controlled the game.
The Brazilian was always walking a tightrope though, one card away from suspension, and ten minutes from time disaster struck as he was forced to bring Wilfred Zaha down with the Palace frontman bearing towards goal.
His evening then went from bad to worse as he missed a ‘big chance’ with the score at 1-1.
The former Real Madrid man’s absence on Sunday cannot be underestimated. As I write, minutes after the full-time whistle has gone, the money has already started to come for the Gunners, shortening from 1.95 to 1.92.
The North Londoners will be bolstered hugely by this news and come into this clash brimming with confidence.
Just compare the manner of their controlled victory over local rivals last weekend to the way Man U let the lead slip on Wednesday…
Manchester United’s midfield looks light now, real light, especially in comparison to Arsenal’s triumvirate of Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard.
Casemiro topped his sides’ charts for defensive output, no player has accumulated more bookings (5), he averages 2.9 tackles (1st), 1.9 fouls (1st) and 1.3 interceptions (3rd) per game.
With him amongst Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes, the Red Devils’ midfield looked a perfect blend of tenacity, guile, technique, creativity and flair.
Without the Brazilian, who will likely be replaced by Scott McTominay or Fred, it looks a long, long way off and without him, I struggle to side with the visitors here.
This is part of the reason I will be backing Arsenal to win on Sunday.
Mikel Arteta’s side have won the most games in the division and lost the fewest, a crucial factor in the title charge though has been their home form.
Yet to lose at the Emirates, there has been a shift in the atmosphere in North London from tepid to – dare I say – intimidating.
I also think a Bruno Fernandes card is worth a tout.
His body language at Selhurst Park on Wednesday was telling, his head was down chuntering to himself as he left the pitch.
The Portuguese midfielder has five bookings to his name this campaign, taking his top-flight tally to 23 in 94 appearances, as he is on track to replicate his tally of 10 from last season.
Over a quarter of those cautions have come against fellow ‘big 6 clubs’ and with Casemiro’s bite missing, he will be hoping to compensate.
