With games coming thick and fast in the Premier League, Matthew O’Regan has his Aston Villa vs Brentford prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview. As we approach the finish line, things are heating up, with teams still battling for the title, Europe and survival.
Saturday’s Premier League affair sees a meeting between two sides doing just that as Champions League-chasing Aston Villa host relegation battling Brentford.
England, Premier League, Saturday, April 6th , 15:00 (UK)
Aston Villa are currently in the midst of an unprecedented season as they sit 4th in the Premier League, as well as being in the quarter-finals of the European Conference League. Villa won’t expect to get anything from a tough mid-week trip to Manchester City, so a big performance at home to a struggling Brentford is imperative.
Unai Emery’s side endured a slight wobble, losing four out of five home games, but have arrested this by recently defeating Ajax and Wolves 4-0 and 2-0 respectively. The Spaniard wouldn’t have been worried regardless, with the defeats coming against Newcastle,Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham. Despite this poor run of home form, the 0-4 defeat to Spurs was their only defeat in their last eight.
Only the top three have a better home record in the league than Villa, with the Villans winning 11 of their 15 games at Villa Park in the league, scoring 37 goals in the process.
The visitors on Saturday are a Brentford side battling to stay in the Premier League after failing to win in any of their last seven games. Thomas Frank’s side finished just two points off Saturday’s hosts, but this season has been in stark contrast, with the Bees currently 32 points behind.
Brentford’s away record is a worry, losing 11 of their 15 away games, including nine of the last ten.
With Villa’s strong home record, coupled with Brentford’s turgid run of form away from home, the value lies massively with the hosts.
With Ollie Watkins limping off against Wolves last weekend, he is confirmed out of the Manchester City game and is contentious for the Brentford game. Therefore, we should see a start for Captain Chaos – Jhon Duran.
The Colombian signed from MLS side Chicago Fire last season and has won the hearts of Villa fans with his chaotic style of football and his hard work. While he only has two Premier League goals since he joined, the 20-year-old has only started one game, with Emery using him as a super-sub and to see out games.
His 12 appearances in his debut campaign all came off the bench. Duran made an average of 7.14 fouls per 90. While these stats will obviously decrease the more he starts and isn’t just on to break up play, but it still shows his willingness to get stuck in .
This season, Duran has been booked five times in 16 Premier League appearances, averaging 1.70 yellows per 90, as well as committing 2.41 fouls per 90. Interestingly, of Duran’s five league cards, only one has come for a foul – a cynical 90 +15th minute foul in the victory over Crystal Palace.
In what should be a physical game against Kristoffer Ajer and Nathan Collins, Duran will be expected to get into many tussles.
The 2-0 victory over Wolves on the weekend was Villa’s fourth home clean sheet of the season, after a 4-0 victory over Everton and back-to-back 1-0 victories over Manchester City and Arsenal earlier in the season.
Villa have conceded 42 and scored 62 goals this season, with their games averaging 3.46 goals. This average is increased to 3.73 when playing at home, with 10/15 of their games seeing BTTS and 11/15 seeing over 2.5 goals.
Brentford games have also been high-scoring, with their games averaging 3.23 goals. The 1-1 draw with Manchester United halted a run of four games in a row that Both Teams To Score and over 2.5 goals had landed in.
The Bees have kept just three away clean sheets all season, so Aston Villa will expect to score a couple of goals. Brentford have also scored in 15 of the last 16, with an away trip to Manchester City the only blight in this record.
Both teams have identical ‘over 2.5 goals’ records (21/30), with Brentford also seeing BTTS in 21/30, compared to Aston Villa’s 20/30.
