Tom Winch is here with a Athletic Bilbao vs Granada prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview. The pair meet on Friday night in La Liga.
The home side has a Champions League place in the top four to fight for. They’re four points behind Atletico with just seven games to go. Matches in La Liga don’t get much easier than this one. Granada’s relegation is inevitable. Sandoval’s side have picked up just two points on their travels this season.
Spain, La Liga, Friday, April 19th, 20:00 (UK)
Granada aren’t relegated yet, but they’re almost guaranteed to play their football in La Liga 2 in the 2024/25 season. Jose Ramon Sandoval’s side is priced at 1.001 to go down. It’s only a matter of time.
Athletic Bilbao have had their party. They won the Copa Del Rey. The Basque side ended their 40-year wait to lift the prestigious trophy. If you haven’t seen the celebrations that followed, I suggest you look. The banks of Bilbao’s River Nervion were full of supporters. It was incredible as they watched their beloved team celebrate a long-awaited final win.
It’s another La Liga clash. Granada are poor, especially away from home. They’re yet to win on their travels this campaign, and I struggle to see that changing on Friday night. No side across Europe’s top five divisions has collected fewer away points than Granada.
Bilbao is a force at Estadio San Mames. An 11-4-1 (W/D/L) proves that. The hosts have collected 37 of their 57 points at this venue in 2023/24. Only Real Madrid have won here.
Ernesto Valverde’s men have led at the break in nine matches at home this season. They’re a significantly better side than Granada.
The visitors are priced at 11.0 to win here. They’ve been behind at the break in ten of 15 away days. I don’t give them much hope. Granada has only scored 12 times, failing to score in nine separate matches.
Gorka Guruzeta has found the back of the net 13 times for Bilbao this campaign. That’s more than any other player. Only six players across the entire division have scored more goals. The 27-year-old has scored ten times at Estadio San Mames in La Liga this term.
Bilbao are firm favourites. That comes as little surprise. They’re priced at 1.25 to win this encounter. Valverde’s men are 1.40 to score two goals and 2.20 to score at least three. A comfortable home victory is likely.
Gorka is the most likely scorer in this fixture. He’s priced at 1.95 to do so. It’s not a massive price, but one that’s understandable. Guruzeta is a man who enjoys playing at this venue. His side are up against the worst away side in the division. No side has conceded more goals than Granada when playing away from home.
The visitors haven’t managed a clean sheet on the road this season. They’re a mess. Bilbao must win to keep their top-four hopes alive. Expect Guruzeta to strike once again.
I’ve not been too friendly towards Granada in this article. A player in particular is having an impressive campaign for the relegation-bound side. Myrto Uzuni is the standout player. The Albanian has found the back of the net ten times across the campaign. That’s not bad, given how poor the club has been throughout.
Granada’s leading scorer is a high price to score. The visitors are priced at 2.00 to score a goal alone. I’m not confident enough to back the 28-year-old to find the back of the net. I’m taking a cautious approach and backing the forward to record a shot on target. A combined 17 players have scored ten or more goals in La Liga this term. Uzuni is in some good company with Lewandowski, Griezmann and Vinicius JR. Bryan Zaragoza has scored the second most with six. The Spaniard isn’t even at the club.
Uzuni is Granada’s only hope. He scored over the weekend and bagged a brace against Sociedad in March. Myrto has recorded a shot on target in six of his seven previous outings. That includes outings against Barca and Valencia.
Our man is on penalty duty. A bonus to our selection if his side were to receive a spot-kick. Uzuni will have limited chances, but he has been in fine form.

Athletic Bilbao appear to be in fantastic shape. They have no injury doubts heading into this encounter.
Oscar Melendo is a doubt. The 26-year-old hasn’t featured since the end of March.
Granada’s injury list is pretty impressive. They have no other apparent absentees.
