Spain, La Liga, Saturday, February 17th, 13:00 (UK)
With the best home form in La Liga, Diego Simeone’s side continue to dominate in front of their own fans. Having dropped just a single point at Metropolitano Stadium, (a crazy 3-3 draw with Getafe well worth catching up on), it’s one of the most difficult places to go in Europe.
Atletico has not one, but two goalscorers within their ranks which make their jobs easier week in, week out. Antoine Greizmann (11 goals, six assists) and Alvaro Morata (13 goals one assist) make up over 50% of their goals this campaign.
Las Palmas haven’t underperformed on the road, collecting 14 points from 12 matches. They have, however, struggled to score goals which has restricted their progress. With just nine goals on the road, this has been their downfall against the top teams.
They failed to score against Real Madrid, Girona, Bilbao and Betis on their travels – and a similar outcome may be on the cards once more. Across those matches listed, Las Palmas only managed 11 shots on target – with only one against Madrid and Bilbao combined.
Since Atletico’s mad game vs Getafe, in which they had Stefan Savic sent off inside 38 minutes, they’ve won four La Liga games to nil as they look to secure a Champions League spot for next year.
Removing Getafe’s result from their home record, Atletico Madrid has only conceded nine goals in 11 home matches, while Las Palmas has failed to score in three of their last five La Liga away games.
Atletico has also won four of their five matches at home to Las Palmas in all competitions to nil, and I’m therefore siding with a comfortable victory for Simeone’s team.
Atletico Madrid vs Las Palmas Prediction odds via bet365 as at 11:00, February 14th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Although Pablo Barrios played just 45 minutes in Atleti’s loss on the weekend, the 20-year-old is expected to be given another run out by Diego Simeone, whether that be from the bench or from the start is difficult to say. Someone who will not feature is Alvaro Morata, who sustained a knee injury in the 1-0 Sevilla loss. The length Morata will spend on the sidelines is unknown, though it looks like he might miss both matches against Inter Milan in the Champions League.
Atletico Madrid possible starting lineup:
Oblak; Savic, Witsel, Hermoso; Molina, De Paul, Koke, Llorente, Lino; Griezmann, Depay.
Las Palmas possible starting lineup:
Valles; Park, Suarez, Marmol, S Cardona; El Haddadi, Loiodice, Perrone, K Rodriguez, Moleiro; Sandro
