Germany, Bundesliga, Sunday, February 25th, 18:30 (UK)
Augsburg extended an unenviable record after a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Mainz last weekend. They remain the only club in Europe’s top-five leagues yet to record a clean sheet this season.
In truth the defeat to the relegation battlers could have been by a wider margin. Nadiem Amiri smashed his penalty against the upright in first half stoppage time.
Now down in 14th place Jess Thorup’s men are only seven points clear of the relegation zone so can’t breathe easy yet. Next up is a Freiburg side who are another of the Bundesliga contingent who have European engagement ahead of their match day 23 clash in the German topflight.
Christian Streich saw his side at least end a three game losing sequence with that late leveller against Frankfurt. Although they did concede three goals for a fourth league game in succession.
Looking to exploit those defensive frailties will be Ruben Vargas. It has not been a stellar campaign for the Swiss international, scoring just once from 16 league appearances however there have been signs of improvement in recent weeks.
The 25-year-old plays in behind the front two of Phillip Tietz and the free-scoring Ermedin Demirovic. Firing in 14 shots in his last five games with six of those on target and at least one in four of them including each of the last three.
