After a successful season which saw Eddie Howe’s Newcastle finish in the top four, the time has arrived for Newcastle to make inroads in the transfer market. The Geordies have been linked with a host of players so far this summer so we caught up with former Newcastle winger John Barnes to assess the players the club have been rumoured to be interested in.

In this article:

Nicolo Barella would be a great signing

Champions League finalist Nicolo Barella has been heavily linked to both Newcastle and Liverpool in recent weeks. By trade Barella is an all action box to box midfielder with an eye for a pass. He is also renowned for his pressing ability which would fit in at both Liverpool and Newcastle.

Barnes is a fan of the potential deal between Newcastle and Barella and believes the midfielder would be a great signing this summer.

“Newcastle are in the Champions League and have a lot of money so they’re probably ahead of where they thought they were going to be. So they’re looking to get players that they probably couldn’t have signed had they not been in the Champions League.”

“They have the opportunity to get a player like Nicolo Barella and he’d be a great signing for them.”

Newcastle would be the best place for Harvey Barnes

Another player that could be of interest to Newcastle according to reports is Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes . It is said that he appeals to a number of Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Newcastle, West Ham and Tottenham. Barnes has made a name for himself during his time at Leicester due to his aggressive and direct nature.

John Barnes feels Newcastle would be the best move for his namesake due to the way Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side play.

“I think Newcastle would be the best move for him because I don’t think he goes straight into the Arsenal or Tottenham team.”

“Tottenham have Son and Kulusevski.”

“I like Barnes. Newcastle would be the best place for Barnes.”

“He’s quick, he’s strong, he’s got the workrate and the ability with a great attitude. He’s direct with a great engine.”

“The type of football Newcastle play would suit him best.”
