Expect a breakthrough season from Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez, who is my pick against City’s number 9. I have already mentioned my expectation for a bounceback from the Reds, and I also expect them to score a lot of goals.

Benfica spotted the Uruguayan whilst he was playing for Almeria in the Spanish second tier, scoring 16 goals for them. Enough to convince the Portuguese giants to splash out €34m for his services.

His first season at Estádio da Luz only produced six goals from 29 appearances but followed that up with a stunning return, hitting the back of the net 26 times in 28 league games. So don’t be put off by his return of nine goals last term following that reported £85m move to Merseyside. He missed plenty of chances, but a year of acclimatisation should see a spike in output from a striker that has all the attributes to flourish at this level.

Christopher Nkunku, a player I have enjoyed watching plunder goals galore for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga and Champions League, looked overpriced at 51.00. That is until he picked up an injury in preseason. Since the arrival of Unai Emery on November 1st, Ollie Watkins’ form has been eye-catching. The Villa striker has found the net with 13 goals in 24 league games. If he can replicate that over the season, there could be value in the odds of 41.00 on offer.

Finally, if you think it nearly impossible for Haaland to go another season injury-free, his understudy Julián Álvarez can be backed at 67.00. As impact subs go, they didn’t come much better than the World Cup winner last season. Álvarez notched 17 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions to contribute to his side winning the treble.

If you are willing to take on Erling Haaland, this is a fun market to explore.

The big Scandinavian took the division by storm last campaign, with 36 goals to his name domestically and 52 on route to a historic treble.

Those exploits have skewed the goalscorer market heavily in his favour, Haaland is 1.73 to top the charts once more, and he certainly justifies that price.

I know I am supposed to be making a goalscorer prediction here, not picking out the value, but I just wanna live in a world where Haaland makes a mockery of the best division in the world. Not for another season, anyway.

With Harry Kane destined for Bayern Munich, Darwin Nunez is the fancy.

He did not break double figures last season but was notoriously wasteful, scoring nine times from an xG of 12.1 and missing 20 big chances.

As the old adage goes, though, you should only start worrying when your strikers are not getting chances. Nunez took a season to warm up in Portugal, scoring the most goals in the league in his second season, and there is every chance he will repeat the trick in England.

Matthew O’Reagan’s Premier League Top Scorer Odds and Predictions: No one will challenge exceeded expectations

Erling Haaland came to Manchester with big shoes to fill and big expectations to meet. With 36 goals from a 32.76xG, it is fair to say the Norwegian far exceeded expectations.

Despite only starting 28 league games, Kevin De Bruyne topped the assist charts with 16 assists. This epitomises the creative genius of the Belgian, one of several City players who are technically profound. Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, and Jack Grealish have also showcased their exceptional quality in the final third. With Mateo Kovacic added to the equation, City boast a plethora of attacking talent to provide the clinical Haaland.

With Kane’s future up in the air and Liverpool’s tendency to spread the goals out, I can see no one else challenging Haaland.

Scott Thornton’s Premier League Top Scorer Odds and Predictions: The Premier League to the sword

Erling Haaland had the debut season at Manchester City that many expected. The Norwegian is a goalscoring machine and was joining Europe’s most formidable team. He broke the Premier League scoring record while helping his side with three pieces of silverware.

It’s difficult to look past the Norwegian once again. Kane was his closest competitor last season but there is uncertainty about his future at Tottenham as the season draws near. Liverpool’s attackers are also capable of challenging for the golden boot. Klopp’s team have scored four in all of their pre-season matches and should score a glut of goals this season.

Nevertheless, the prediction has got to be Haaland. City can put any team to the sword and Haaland can fill his boots in those matches. He scored 26 league goals last season his xG of 32.76 was far superior to anyone else in the league.

Tom Winch’s Premier League Top Scorer Odds and Predictions: A confidence player brimming with just that

With Erling Haaland about, you’re either brave or a little bit stupid to back another player to score the most goals, but that’s what I’m doing, stupidly.

Darwin Nunez was a headless chicken last season; amazing to watch, but some of the things he did were mind-blowing, in ways good and bad. There’s no denying that there’s a top talent in there somewhere, and in a side where I’m expecting lots of goals to be scored, the Uruguayan may have an outside chance.

Despite Haaland’s dominance last season, he’s no bigger than 1.72 to claim another golden boot. The odds don’t really appeal for a season-long selection where anything could happen. Nunez is priced at 19.0 in places, and I’m happy to take that price on.

With Liverpool’s current midfield saga, winning games by simply outscoring the opposition may be their best option. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai will provide plenty going forward from the centre of the park, which will benefit the forward line.

Nunez has scored four times in preseason. And he’s a ‘confidence player’. His second season in Portugal with Benfica took off, scoring 32 times across the league and Champions League. He’s now heading into his second year in England.
