Here at bettingexpert Expert Insights, we have taken a closer look at the big game in Spain on Sunday night. High-flying Barcelona travel to a Bilbao side struggling for form. We’ve constructed a bet builder for this clash in the preview below.
In this article:
Spain, La Liga, Sunday, March 12th, 20:00 (UK)
Barcelona have had a fantastic season in La Liga, they’re sitting comfortably at the top and are nine points ahead of Real Madrid. Xavi’s side have won eight of their nine games in 2023 and now head to Estadio San Mames where they’ve won just once in their last six here.
Bilbao are 9th. Ernesto Valverde’s side have struggled for points in recent weeks. Oihan Sancet received a red card last weekend so will be suspended here. Only two sides have earned fewer points than Bilbao since the return, they’ll need to improve their performances and fast if a top 6 spot is still the goal.
Araujo, Ousmane Dembele and Pedri will miss this clash for various reasons, Frenkie De Jong is a doubt due to injury. Robert Lewandowski is most likely to return to the starting lineup after missing the previous two matches.
In their 24 top-flight matches, Barcelona have conceded just eight goals. The reverse meeting ended 4-0 in favour of Xavi’s men but I expect this meeting to be a lot closer on Sunday night.
Bilbao are priced at 3.50 to win here, Barcelona are available at 2.15 with the draw coming in at 3.30. The goal line is set at 2.25 on the Asian market. You could look at the prices and think Barca are a strong price, which I’d agree with given Lewandowski is back, Bilbao are struggling with form and their top scorer will be absent.
It’s hard to envisage Barcelona leaving Bilbao empty-handed. They’ve lost just twice this campaign. Even in both defeats, Barcelona had the greater share of possession as well as shots.
Valverde’s side have won six of 12 at home, but four of those wins came against teams in the bottom half. Girona came here a couple of weeks ago and left with all three points, Real Madrid won 2-0 in this stadium in late January.
Jesus Gil Manzano is the man in the middle here. The referee has taken charge of 12 games in the Spanish top flight this campaign and has brandished 68 yellow cards alongside six reds. He’s booked both teams after the break in 11 of those 12 matches. With both sides needing a result for different reasons, I can see Manzano being forced to get his cards out a few times after the break.
Bilbao have kept a single shoutout in their last eight league games. They have several injuries throughout the squad. With Barcelona scoring in 22/24 this season and with the addition of Lewandowski, finding the back of the net shouldn’t be a huge ask.
