At this point of the Championship season, there is a frontrunner in claret and blue. However, the latest race for promotion is looking to be an incredibly congested one.

With six points separating the top 6 places, the ebb and flow of England’s second tier has been constant in these first couple of months. Norwich and Sheffield United were previously in pole position, they have been replaced by Burnley and QPR.

The Rs were knocked off the summit in midweek and with Vincent Kompany’s Clarets earning a huge win over Dean Smith’s Canaries, the Turf Moor outfit now have a two-point lead in their possession.

A lead that could be converted to a deficit if Michael Beale gets his own way in the West Midlands. After turning down a move to this area, he will look to vindicate his own decision by leading QPR back to the Premier League.

If that is to be the case, his men will need to get the better of matches like this. Although Birmingham are looking awkwardly over their shoulders, they are known to dig out results when needed.

Arguably they need one on Friday starting it in 15th. They are only three points clear of the relegation zone. A standing that could quite easily change by the time this weekend’s fixtures have concluded.

When looking at QPR’s last six league outings, the only blot on their copybook was a recent 3-1 defeat to Luton. With 15 points being picked up from the last 18 on offer, the West London outfit are certainly one of the form teams in the division.

Form that also stands them in good stead before Friday night. With the added incentive of clawing back top spot – even if for less than 24 hours, I am backing the Rs to come out on top.

Should you fancy this outcome in a standalone bet, you can currently back the visitors to win at odds of 3.00. At this price and QPR’s current standing, I believe that constitutes rather good value.

But that can still be improved. I’m looking at Lyndon Dykes who has already scored five in the Championship this season. He looks good value to make it a half-dozen here.

If QPR are to come out on top, they will likely cause Birmingham to defend at large. This means at least five total corners should be reached.

Five is also the magic number when it comes to cards. Thankfully, I do not envisage this encounter being labelled as the battle of St Andrews and therefore, under six total cards is also going on my betting slip. Add all four together for a bet builder of 9.50.
