Europe, Champions League, Saturday, June 1st, 20:00 (UK)
Real Madrid have the chance to win their 15th Champions League crown on Wednesday night, and we are backing them to get the job done in normal time. Carlo Ancelotti has already won this competition four times as a manager and has had plenty of time to prepare for this match. The legendary boss has masterminded a remarkable campaign that has seen Real Madrid win La Liga at a canter, but Europe is always the focus in the Spanish capital.
Los Blancos haven’t tasted defeat since the 24th of September, when they were beaten 3-1 by Atletico Madrid. They are now enjoying an astonishing unbeaten run of 47 matches. Over that period, they scored an average of 2.4 goals per game and conceded just 0.89.
Dortmund haven’t been at their best in domestic competitions this season. They finished 5th in the Bundesliga, and consistency has been an issue. Edin Terzic’s side has lost their last ten matches, and they are the underdogs here.
Real Madrid have a wealth of talent available. Carlo Ancelotti has proven himself to be tactically flexible in what has been a taxing campaign. However, no matter what shape or personnel they use, their matches tend to see fewer throws. Their Champions League matches this season have seen an average of 26.5 throws per game. Only Manchester City matches had fewer throws in this competition. Bet365 have set the line at 33.5 throws for this match. There have been 33 throws or less in all 12 of Real Madrid’s European matches this season.
This trend isn’t isolated to the Champions League. Their La Liga matches may average 34.05 throws per game, but that is six less than the overall league average.
Dortmund’s Champions League matches have seen an average of 36.92 throws per game so we are relying on Real being able to impose their game on the German side here. The average throws per game in this competition since the start of the group stages is 36.79, so Dortmund’s numbers aren’t alarmingly high.
Borussia Dortmund pressed more intensely last season, and that is reflected in the PPDA (passes per defensive action) data. The 1.78 increase in PPDA over the Bundesliga campaign highlights how they have switched to a more pragmatic defensive approach. Nevertheless, the tackle numbers in their matches have remained high. Their league matches have seen an average of 34.97 tackles, the third most in Germany’s top flight.
Terzic’s side’s matches in the Champions League have seen even more tackles, with an average of 37.92 per game. There have been 35 tackles or more in five of their six knockout games in this competition this season. Dortmund will need to be combative here to stop Madrid’s midfield from dictating the pace of this game.
Real Madrid attempt the most dribbles per game in the Spanish League with an average of 10.55 per game. Unsurprisingly, this has led to the opposition making an average of 18.55 tackles per game, the third most in La Liga. There were 40 tackles in the match the last time Real competed in the Champions League final.
Borussia Dortmund vs Real Madrid Prediction odds via bet365 as at 09:41, May 27th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Borussia Dortmund will be without Ramy Bensebaini and Julie Duranville. Edin Terzic will be delighted he has the majority of the his players at his disposal as he attempts to conjure up a place than can topple Real Madrid.
Carlo Ancelotti will have most of his players available for Saturday’s showpiece. David Alaba remains out with a knee injury and Aurelien Tchouameni will have to be assessed. Other than that, there are no injury worries for Real Madrid. All of their key attacking players will feature in what promises to be a memorable game.
Borussia Dortmund possible starting lineup:
Kobel; Ryerson, Hummels, Schlotterbeck, Maatsen; Can, Sabitzer; Adeyemi, Brandt, Sancho; Füllkrug
Real Madrid possible starting lineup:
Courtois; Carvajal, Nacho, Rüdiger, Mendy; Valverde, Kroos, Camavinga; Bellingham; Rodrygo, Vinícius Júnior
