The visitors created more than one issue for Italy in their Euro 2024 qualifying group so who better to oversee a Bosnia vs Ukraine prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview than our Italian football expert, Daniele Fisichella.
Prediction: Bosnia 0-2 Ukraine
The winner of this match will host the final of the play-offs Path B, on Tuesday, against Israel or Iceland.
Bettingexpert Football Editor, Sam Ingram, joins host Daniel Jenkins to reacts to the Champions League draw for the quarter finals, before turning attentions to the England Euros ‘To Make the Squad’ betting market.
The pair also analyses a tightly bunched Championship table ahead of Sam bringing shame to his hometown club with a relegation outright betting opportunity.
Euro 2024 qualifiers, play-offs semi-final, Thursday March 21st, 19:45 (UK)
The visitors are, rightly, favorites to win the match and advance to the play-offs final as they’re the strongest of all the four teams in Path B.
Not only Ukraine are way above the other nations in the FIFA Ranking (they’re 24th, whereas the rest are all after the 70th place), but they also took part in the last three Euros.
The team managed by Serhiy Rebrov finished level on points (14) in group C with Italy, and in the last decisive game, they gave the current champions more than a scare.
The game, played in Leverkusen, ended scoreless but the Ukrainians felt aggrieved for not being awarded a late penalty that (if scored) would have sent them directly to the Euros.
In 2022, Ukraine were unlucky to lose to Wales in the play-off final to go to the Qatar World Cup.
On that occasion they had played only four days before against Scotland (which they beat 3-1 in Glasgow), whereas the Welsh could use their second string players against Poland in a far less important Nations League game.
Nonetheless, Ukraine were stopped only by Wayne Hennessey, who produced a man-of-the-match performance, making nine saves to protect the 1-0 lead that sent Gareth Bale & co to their first World Cup since 1958.
Ukraine has been consistently good over the last few years and kept performing at a very high level despite the disruptions caused by the conflict with Russia to players and their entire football system.
The visitors have only lost two of their last 10 competitive matches and in the recent Nations League were defeated only once (3-0 away at Scotland).
Their record on the road, in official matches, is impressive; not long ago, they drew 1-1 with France and beat Bosnia and Herzegovina (2-0), Finland, Scotland, Ireland, Armenia and Macedonia.
Ukraine’s only two defeats in the Euro Qualifiers were at Wembley (England won 2-0) and San Siro (2-1 for the Italians), but on both occasions, the visitors gave a good account of themselves.
The same can’t be said about Bosnia and Herzegovina who finished fifth in their qualifying group, behind Iceland and Luxembourg. Only Estonia, among the teams involved in these play-offs had a worse campaign (no wins) than the side managed by Savo Milošević.
The Dragons have only netted nine times in ten games and just managed to beat Lichtenstein (twice) and Iceland 3-0 in the opening match.
Bosnia and Herzegovina are taking part in the play-offs in virtue of their Nations League success as they topped the League B, Group 3, against Finland, Montenegro and Romania.
But in that campaign all their wins were narrow ones as the hosts also equalized in stoppage time in Finland.
Bosnia and Herzegovina are not short of talent: few teams in these play-offs can count two Champions League finalists (Edin Dzeko and Miralem Pjanic) on their ranks, plus the international experience of Senad Kolasinac.
However the Ukranians might just prove too strong for a side, Bosnia, that have only kept four clean sheets in the last 16 competitive matches.
Milosevic’s side also won just one of their 2022 World Cup qualifiers and lost all the last three Euros play-offs, the last one, in 2020, at home on penalties against Northern Ireland.
Tsygankov and Dobvyk are having an exceptional season with Girona, whereas Zinchenko, Zabarny, and Mudryk are all playing at the highest level.
Ukraine even got a choice between two good goalkeepers, Trubin and Lunin.
22-years-old Danylo Sikan is one of the biggest talents of this team and this season has scored four goals in the Champions League.
He’s only played seven games for the national side and just one from the start, but if Rebrov gives him the nod (considering the absence of Tsygankov), the Shakhtar Donetsk striker is definitely one to watch.
