England, Premier League, Saturday, March 9th, 15:00 (UK)
The last time these sides met in the Premier League on the south coast was on the opening day of the 2019/20 campaign.
It was Sheffield United’s first top-flight game in over a decade, Chris Wilder was at the helm and his side snatched a point two minutes from time via the mid-drift of boyhood Blade and captain Billy Sharp.
Sheff Utd went on to finish ninth that season, and Bournemouth went down.
Fast forward to the next scheduled top flight duel at the Vitality and the only thing that has not changed is the man in the dugout for the visitors though Wilder has taken charge of Middlesbrough and Watford in the meantime.
This time round, it is the Cherries that have lofty ambitions of a top-half finish, and the Blades look destined for the drop.
Andoni Iraola’s side are closer to 10th than they are the dotted line, and though their Spanish supremo won’t admit it, they look set to continue trending upwards this season.
Speaking after the 2-0 win at Turf Moor, Iraola said that win was a huge step towards Premier League survival; now 11 points clear of Luton, their Premier League status seems all but confirmed for another season.
Their next opponents are down and out. The Blades have only won three games this term, shipping 72 goals in the process and only mustering 13 points.
Bournemouth should win comfortably, but at 1.33 the value is elsewhere.
Backing the hosts to score over 2.5 goals at 2.20 looks the best way in.
Bournemouth loves to get stuck in completing an average of 19 tackles a game. No side trumps them for fouls committed either, with 13.2 per game averaged in the top flight, and that rises to 12.9 when playing on home soil.
Justin Kluivert is the serial offender notching up an average of 1.6 a game, the Dutch attacker is also one of the Cherries most carded players with four bookings to his name, all of which have come in his last 10 top flight starts.
Kluivert was carded in his side’s last outing at Turf Moor, and this was his second in twice as many Premier League appearances.
The lack of competitiveness of this fixture is a major caveat but all of Kluivert’s cards have come in the first half of games so we don’t need a closely fought contest for the duration, just a competitive start.
At 26.00, I wouldn’t put anyone off backing Kluivert to be carded first, given his feisty record.
What happens when the most foul happy side meets the side with the worst disciplinary record and the games overseen by one of the most card happy referees in the Premier League?
Well I would think bookings will be plentiful.
Combining a Kluivert card with Ben Osborn to have his name taken appeals on Saturday.
With two cards to his name Osborn isn’t a serial offender but it is worth noting he has only played 610 of domestic action this term.
With the Blades’ injury issues at full-back, the versatile player should slot in on the left side of the defence to oppose Antoine Semenyo, who was fouled five times against Manchester City.
Bournemouth vs Sheffield United Prediction odds via Betfair, bet365 as at 11:30, March 6th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Marcos Senesi was replaced early in the win at Turf Moor by Chris Mepham. Ireola described losing the Argentine as a “very bad moment” with defenders of short supply for the Cherries at the moment. Mepam had a solid game and should come in at the heart of defence if Senesi is not fit.
After the humiliation against Arsenal, Chris Wilder hinted that youngsters may get minutes for the remainder of the season. Oli McBurnie, James McAtee and Tom Davies were withdraw at half-time on Monday but all should start here.
Bournemouth possible starting lineup: Neto; Smith, Zabarnyi, Mepham, Kerkez; Christie, Cook; Semenyo, Kluivert, Tavernier; Solanke
Sheffield United possible starting lineup: Grbic; Bogle, Baldock, Ahmedhodzic, Robinson, Osborn; Hamer, Souza, Davies; McAtee, McBurnie
