Brest vs Marseille Tip 1: Hosts to add to Marseille woes
France, Ligue 1, Sunday 18th February, 19:45 (UK)
It’s hard to believe that Brest were staring relegation in the face this time last season. The hire of Eric Roy as manager was an absolute masterstroke, and in the last calendar year, he’s probably the candidate to be the best-performing manager in Ligue 1.
I don’t think anyone expected Brest to kick on as much as they have done in this campaign. The Breton outfit are fourth in the table and head into this match unbeaten in 10 league games. They have slightly overachieved their metrics, especially defensively, but their expected points of 32.01 would still put them in the top seven.
This looks like a great time to be facing an out-of-form Marseille, who seems lost under the current stewardship of Gennaro Gattuso. OM have only suffered defeat in one of their last ten Ligue 1 fixtures, but the standard of their actual performances has totally plummeted since the start of the new year.
The 1-1 draw vs Metz last week was a timid display, and there have been too many misfiring moments in recent weeks. Key man Chancel Mbemba should be back from AFCON duty, but Samuel Gigot is suspended. Taking Brest on a 0.0 Asian handicap looks like a really good, solid bet. We get full cover on the draw, which can’t be ruled out. Marseille do not look like winning this match, though, especially just three days after playing Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.
- Brest vs Marseille Tip 1: Brest 0.0 Asian Handicap (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.88

- Stake: 10/10
Brest vs Marseille Tip 2: Both sides can hit the back of the net in Brittany
Marseille have kept one clean sheet in all competitions since December 6th, which was against fourth-tier side Thionville in the Coupe de France. They look vulnerable at the back and have been conceding too many chances. The return of Chancel Mbemba from AFCON duty should help matters, but he might not even start after a tough campaign in Africa with DR Congo. Marseille also play this match just three days after an away trip in Europe against Shakhtar. Brest must fancy themselves to score at least once vs this defence. Only Nice and Rennes have managed to stop Brest from scoring in front of their own fans this season.
The goal line of 2.25 looks low, but the better bet appears to be BTTS, yes, at generous odds of 1.80. This covers the 1-1 draw possibility, something which can’t be ruled out and was the exact scoreline for both teams in their fixtures last week. It’s mad to say that the most dangerous part about this bet is getting Marseille to hit the back of the net. Brest have actually kept four clean sheets in their last five home games, but OM have enough firepower to threaten. They have the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Azzedine Ounahi and new signing Faris Moumbagna, who netted against Metz last week.
For all their doom and gloom, only Brighton and Lyon have stopped Marseille from scoring at least once in their last 14 games. There are enough offensive weapons for this BTTS – Yes bet to hit.
- Brest vs Marseille Tip 2: BTTS – Yes (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.80
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 10/10
Brest vs Marseille Tip 3: Moumbagna to build on debut goal last week
Marseille signed Faris Moumbagna in the January transfer window from Norwegian club Bodo Glimt for roughly £8m. The Cameroonian striker, who was recently on AFCON duty, got given his first start for the club last week vs Metz and rewarded Gennaro Gattuso with a goal.
He is a powerful attacking player who possesses good strength and has a knack for getting into some great positions. He made a real menace of himself against Metz and was one of the few rays of light from that game for OM.
Moumbagna scored 24 goals in 50 appearances for Bodo Glimt, with six of those in UEFA competitions, on which stage he caught the eye of many clubs in 2023. He is a proven goalscorer and clearly possesses plenty of confidence. The feeling around Marseille is not great right now, but he is new to the club, and he has brought with him some exuberance, which might rub off on some other players.
Everyone focuses on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, so I think the goal-scoring value lies with Moumbagna here at juicy odds of 2.75. He will play on the left wing, cutting inside, and I am sure he’ll get some decent opportunities to add to his goal from last week.
- Brest vs Marseille Tip 3: Faris Moumbagna to score anytime (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.75
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 8/10

Brest vs Marseille Team News and Possible Lineups: Gigot suspended for Marseille
Brest has a key suspension, with goalkeeper Marco Bizot ruled out after his red card last week. Gregoire Coudert takes the gloves, which is certainly a downgrade.
Marseille defender Samuel Gigot is also banned after a red card, but Chancel Mbemba returns from AFCON duty, which is a boost.
Brest possible starting lineup:
Coudert, Locko, Le Cardinal, Chardonnet, Lala, Magnetti, Lees-Melou, Camara, Pereira Lage, Mounie, Del Castillo
Marseille possible starting lineup:
Lopez, Merlin, Balerdi, Mbemba, Clauss, Ounahi, Harit, Onana, Moumbagna, Aubameyang, Ndiaye
