Napoli are on an eight-game winning streak across all competitions. Included in that run is the 6-1 thumping of Ajax at the Johan Cruijff Arena last week. Falling behind in the 9th minute served only to spark the Azzurri into life. With goals from Giacomo Raspadori (2), Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Piotr Zieliński, the man of the moment Khvicha Kvaratshkelia and Giovanni Simeone. The Serie A leaders continued in the same vein back in domestic action at the weekend. Serving up a 4-1 thrashing to Cremonese in front of the newly promoted side’s own fans.
Following four games without a win, Ajax at least bounced back to form in Eredivisie. Surviving a wobble having raced into a three-goal lead scoring in the 95th minute to seal a 4-2 victory at Volendam. However, following last week’s defeat Alfred Schreuder claimed that his side are now battling it out with Rangers for a Europa League spot. Both he and captain Dusan Tadic admitted to struggling following the sale of several key players over the summer.
There are no signs of this incredible attacking fluency under Luciano Spalletti abating. With 35 goals already scored across their 12 competitive fixtures so far this season. A Napoli win with over 2.5 goals has copped in nine of their 10 victories in this current campaign. The visitors have conceded twice in four of their six away games. Getting on the scoresheet themselves in each one including their two defeats. This looks sure to follow a similar pattern.

Following successive Champions League defeats, Barcelona are staring down the barrel of a second consecutive failure to progress from the group stages. Group C leaders Bayern Munich already look over the hill and far away. Leaving these two giants of European football left to battle for the runners-up spot. Domestically Barça remain top of La Liga following a hard fought 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo on Sunday. Usually, the focus would switch to this weekend’s El Clásico but this must-win tie takes precedence.
Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s only goal of the game was the difference at the San Siro last week. Giving Simone Inzaghi’s side a vital edge in the group. The Nerazzurri kept the momentum going with a 2-1 win at Sassuolo on Saturday. Snapping a two-game losing run in Serie A. I expect they would happily sign for a draw at Camp Nou on Wednesday.
Barcelona have been in phenomenal defensive shape this season. The summer signing of Robert Lewandowski guaranteed goals. But the fact they have conceded just one goal in eight La Liga outings this season is eye-catching. The weekend win was a sixth-consecutive clean sheet.
Last week’s reverse fixture saw a battle between the Catalan’s patient passing style against Inter’s counter-attacking. Expect more of the same here. The visitors will have no real desire to win this one and even a 1-0 defeat is not the end of the world for them. We saw a combined xG of just 0.65 at the San Siro last week. A lack of goals is the call here again.
More Barcelona vs Inter Milan Tips
UEFA, Champions League, Wednesday, October 12th, 20:00 (UK)
A 2-0 win over Mlada Boleslav on Saturday saw Viktoria Plzeň stretch their lead at the top of the Czech top flight to four points. A 10-game unbeaten run to begin their campaign has included eight wins.
It’s a stark contrast to their opening three games in the tougher environment of Champions League Group C. Dealt a severely tough hand in having to compete with European heavyweights Barcelona, Inter Milan and opponents here Bayern Munich. Three defeats, one goal scored and 12 conceded is not too much of a surprise.
The German champions swept Plzeň aside in the reverse fixture last week. Racing into a 3-0 lead with little more than 20 minutes on the clock. Their 13 shots on target yielded a 5-0 victory. Julian Nagelsmann would have been disappointed to see his side let a two-goal lead slip against Bundesliga rivals Dortmund at the weekend. But the Bavarians are unbeaten in an incredible 31 UCL group stage games and look to have far too much for their hosts here.
Plzeň boss Michal Bílek has already stated their German opponents’ quality was out of his side’s reach following the reverse fixture. That kind of admission doesn’t bode well for the Czech champions springing a surprise here. It does however lead me to expect plenty more goals at the Doosan Arena. Albeit likely at one end. Bayern could seal qualification with a win here if the result in Spain goes their way. So expect a fully motivated visiting side to hold up their end of the bargain.
