Selection 1: Hull vs Swansea Best Bet

The billing

Will this be Shota Arveladze’s first game in charge of Hull?

Hosts’ form

Hull come into this game off the back of wins to nil over second and third in the Championship, Blackburn and Bournemouth, which ordinarily would be the main story.

Instead, it’s that a Turkish media consortium led by Acun Ilıcalı has completed a takeover of the Tigers, followed promptly by the dismissal of head coach Grant McCann.

Ilıcalı admitted himself in a club statement that the timing of the decision looked odd, but that he wanted to make it at this point rather than wait simply for PR purposes.

Former Rangers forward Shota Arveladze, who last managed Pakhtakor Tashkent FK in Uzbekistan, is reportedly set to take McCann’s place and bring Süper Lig top goalscorer Aleksandar Pešić from Turkish club Fatih Karagümrük, but it is in doubt where either of those things will formally take place before Saturday’s game.

If they don’t, first-team coach Tony Pennock and goalkeeping coach Barry Richardson could take interim charge.

Visitors’ form

For all their stylistic appeal, Swansea had been something of a soft touch under Russ Martin and at times too easy to score against, so they needed to tighten up defensively in 2022.

The calender year has started in the right fashion from that perspective, therefore, with the Swans conceding only once in three unbeaten league games against decent opposition in Huddersfield, PNE and QPR.

The Tactics Board

Swansea fielded a conservative set of wing-backs last time out in Cyrus Christie and Joel Latibeaudiere, whereas Hull have converted forwards Ryan Longman and Randell Williams into those positions.

Even when the Tigers are under pressure, therefore, they will still have that immediate outballs which will help them convert defence into attack.

Prediction & Best Bet

Pennock and Richardson are unlikely to make any unforced alterations to the side that won at Bournemouth, which means Keane Lewis-Potter will operate up top rather than as a wing-back: the talented forward is a cool 3.25 to score anytime.

Selection 2: Luton Town vs Blackburn Best Bet

The billing

Luton and Blackburn can both defy the odds this season – but will it be the Hatters’ unlikely Play-Off quest that continues on Saturday, or the shock top two charge from Tony Mowbray’s side?

Hosts’ form

Luton have their work cut out to finish in the top six, with so many of their rivals picking up in recent weeks, but a run of three league wins in four gives Nathan Jones’ side a chance.

The concern for the Bedfordshire club, though, would be that the last two performances – the 2-0 loss at Sheffield United and the midweek victory over Bristol City – have been short of the standards their fiery coach demands.

Visitors’ form

Rovers were without top goalscorer Ben Brereton Diaz on Monday night through international duty, and without Joe Rothwell due to a back issue: both have been linked with a late move away this window, too.

With that in mind, the Lancashire club did brilliantly to bounce back from the meek 2-0 loss at Hull last time out with a battling 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough, which saw them move into the top two.

The Tactics Board

Amari’i Bell played a part in Blackburn’s League One promotion in 2017-18, but at Championship level has arguably been found wanting for productivity.

Luton, though, saw enough in Bell to bring him in last year, and the 27-year-old started in the midweek victory over Bristol City: now, the left-back seeks to show his former employers what they’re missing.

Prediction & Best Bet

How often do you get a team that’s 2nd in the table at 3.10 for victory against a side that’s 10th? The value is with the visitors here.

Selection 3: Middlesbrough vs Coventry Best Bet

The billing

Victory for either side would elevate them into the top six by virtue of points per game.

Hosts’ form

Middlesbrough found their end product lacking in the 1-0 defeat at Blackburn last time out.

Chris Wilder’s side dominated possession and were in the ascendency in the second half, but goalscoring midfielder Matt Crooks was unable to finish the two big chances that came his way.

Visitors’ form

Two wins in three have re-ignited Coventry’s Play-Off hopes. The 4-1 victory at Peterborough was all about the attacking side of their game, with Matt Godden on fire, but the 1-0 win over Stoke was more about control, including their work against the ball.

The Sky Blues restricted a fellow top half side to seven efforts at goal, and none on target, which speaks to outstanding game management from Mark Robins’ side.

The Tactics Board

Middlesbrough will have a large portion of possession in the Midlands and look to initiate triangle sequences in wide areas, especially on the right via Anfernee Dijksteel, Isaiah Jones and Crooks, while Andraz Sporar can stretch things further with his runs in behind.

Jake Bidwell, Jake Clarke-Salter and Jordan Shipley, though, are three tactically tuned in players who should be able to quell that threat on Coventry’s left, so Boro may end up being forced to the right, where those combinations have not amalgamated quite so quickly.

Prediction & Best Bet

Coventry are 3.75 for the clean sheet, which looks excellent value given their solidity of their showing last time out.

Selection 4: Millwall vs West Bromwich Albion Best Bet

The billing

A high-pressure game at the Den: Millwall fans want a response to three straight defeats, but Albion are under more heat due to the form of other Play-Off contenders.

Hosts’ form

Millwall have only had three league games this season that have been decided by a margin of more than one goal.

The Lions have a habit of living on fine margins and while for much of the campaign, that has led to a series of draws, more recently their encounters have either swung one way or the other.

Gary Rowett’s side, though, have more to gain from pushing the envelope for the victories, because they need approximately 39 points from 20 games to reach the Play-Offs and will not get anyway near that figure with their current rate of creativity.

Visitors’ form

Earlier this month, the Baggies signed Daryl Dike from Orlando City, after the physical front-man caught fire for Valerien Ismael at Barnsley last term.

Unfortunately, Dike picked up a hamstring injury in the 3-0 victory over Peterborough, while Jordan Hugill has struggled more than expected in the Black Country and there is no other powerful striker in the squad.

In order to address this, Albion have been linked with a late move for M’Bala Nzola from Serie A outfit Spezia.

The Tactics Board

Bearing in mind the potential shortages in this West Brom squad, and the attacking troubles Millwall have had, this could be a low-scoring encounter.

Versatile forward Jed Wallace has been far, far below his best this term, but is still the Lions’ key outlet, as shown by the struggles in his absence in the 1-0 loss at Blackpool last time out.

The hope is that Oli Burke, on loan from Sheffield United and Tyler Burey, recalled from Hartlepool, can offer a spark but are unlikely to be as refined in the final third.

Prediction & Best Bet

Millwall without much quality or creativity against a West Brom side missing a focal point: we could be looking at a stalemate. Under 2.5 goals is 1.72.

Selection 5: Preston vs Bristol City Best Bet

The billing

North End and Bristol City are both looking to secure a top half finish, which would set them on the right footing for what they hope will be bigger things in 2022-23.

Hosts’ form

Ryan Lowe has made an impact at Deepdale by implementing a style of football far more exciting and progressive than that of his predecessor, but still the squad is yet to be tailored to his methods.

That was proved in the 1-0 defeat at Swansea, where his side mustered just nine efforts at goal and one on target.

That was by no means a reflection of Lowe’s conservatism, but rather the personnel, especially on the left side of the field.

Visitors’ form

Bristol City boss Nigel Pearson bemoaned his side’s set piece defending in the 2-1 defeat to Luton last time out, in an otherwise competitive showing.

There was, perhaps, less pressure on that game because of the 3-2 Severnside Derby victory over Cardiff on Saturday, in which Chris Martin, Andi Weimann and Antoine Semenyo linked up delightfully for the midtable side.

The Tactics Board

Martin is getting to the stage of his career, at 33, where he can no longer out-run an opposing rear-guard, or bully them with his physicality, like he perhaps used to be able to.

The former Derby striker, though, retains a cushioned touch and exquisite technique which allows him to bring the best out of those around him, almost as a deep-lying forward, on top of his goalscoring process which he proved with a brace against the Bluebirds.

On top of that, the hardworking Weimann stretches games with his runs in behind, while Semenyo loves to use his pace to reach the sides of the penalty area, before bringing his trickery to the fore.

Martin, Weimann and Semenyo all bring different qualities to the table and can test the Lilywhites.

Prediction & Best Bet

When one pits Lowe’s attacking methods against Bristol City’s dangerous front-three, the likelihood is an enterprising encounter. Both Teams To Score can be backed at a shade of odds-on: 1.90.

What is an EFL Acca?

An EFL Acca is a type of betting that involves combining several selections across different matches with one single stake. An acca or accumulator usually has at least four selections but it can include many many more. An EFL acca is one such bet that only involves matches from the EFL or English Football League, the second to the fourth tiers of English football. The benefits of an EFL acca are that the odds can be massive with a very small stake as the odds for all selections are multiplied together. Every pick needs to win or your EFL acca will lose.
