Championship Best Bets: Monday, April, 10th

We are back with more Championship best bets ahead of another full round of fixtures this Bank Holiday Monday. Good Friday saw more thrills and spills than your average Easter egg hunt.

Burnley secured their return back to the Premier League with victory at Middlesbrough. In doing so all but consigned Michael Carrick’s side to the playoffs. Sheffield United look certain to join the Clarets, now eight points clear of 3rd placed Luton with a game in hand.

Huddersfield made it three wins in a row with victory at Watford and are now out of the bottom three. Reading take their place in the drop zone with only three points separating the Royals in 22nd and Rotherham in 18th.

Three of Monday’s games go under the microscope, with a best bet in each.

Luton vs Blackpool Preview

England, Championship, Monday, April 10th, 15:00 (UK)

Rob Edwards saw his side pick up a point in an attritional goalless draw with Millwall on Friday. Although it moved his side up to 3rd keeping an eight point puffer in the playoff race arguably made him even happier. The Hatters are now unbeaten in eight games with their only defeat in the last 14 league outings coming at freshly promoted champions elect Burnley. The draw at the Den once again showing the foundation of Luton’s promotion campaign is their rock solid defence. They have now conceded just once in the last six matches.

At the other end of the table Blackpool crashed to a wretched 3-1 home defeat to Cardiff on Friday. The result ended Mick McCarthy’s three month spell in charge of the club. Overseeing just two wins in 14 matches in all competitions he leaves the Seasiders second bottom of the table, seven points from safety.

Luton vs Blackpool Best Bet

Luton have won their last three home games “to-nil” and that looks a very solid option once more. Blackpool have lost their last eight on the road but do have some good options in forward areas. With the Easter fixtures so close together there is more chance of a defensive lapse. Given the Tangerines have lost each of their last three away games by two goals my preferred play here is the Asian handicap.

  • Selection: Luton -1 Asian Handicap (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.95 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 8/10

Preston vs Reading Preview

England, Championship, Monday, April 10th, 15:00 (UK)

Tom Cannon kept Preston’s late play-off charge alive on Good Friday. The on-loan Everton youngster fired two goals in the space of four second-half minutes to earn his side a 2-0 win at QPR. That recorded a fourth win in the last five games and moves the Lilywhites up to 8th in the Championship. Ryan Lowe’s men are now only two points outside the playoff places.

It’s been a bad week for Reading. The Royals were sucked right back into the relegation dogfight after being docked six points for breaking EFL financial rules. On the pitch Andy Carrol briefly gave his side hope by giving them the lead against Birmingham. However, Paul Ince’s side allowed the visitors an equaliser which meant a third successive 1-1 draw. That stretched their run without a win to seven games and more worryingly dropped them into the bottom three.

Preston vs Reading Best Bet

Two sides with polar opposite trajectories face off at Deepdale. Preston will take confidence from their last two home wins coming against Reading’s relegation rivals Blackpool and Cardiff. In fact all of the Lilywhites last five wins have all come against sides currently in the bottom seven. Ryan Lowe will be confident of adding the Royals to that list. Paul Ince’s men have the worst away record in the division. Losing 14 of their 20 road trips picking up just 12 points all season. As was the case on Friday, North End look undervalued here.

  • Selection: Preston to win (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 2.00 (William Hill)
  • Stakes: 7/10

West Brom vs QPR Preview

England, Championship, Monday, April 10th, 15:00 (UK)

West Brom’s faint playoff hopes took another dent with a disastrous defeat to relegation threatened Rotherham on Friday. The Baggies comfortably beaten 3-1 despite Jon Swift’s first-half penalty giving them the lead. The Millers also hitting the frame of the goal on three other occasions. Carlos Corberán’s side are now winless in three games and find themselves five points outside the top six.

QPR’s alarming nosedive down the Championship table shows no sign of slowing. The R’s have now recorded just two wins in their last 24 league games. The 2-0 home defeat to Preston was a fourth in succession. Gareth Ainsworth has lost six of his seven games in charge since taking over from Neil Critchley at the end of February. With the ex-Wycombe boss admitting after the game that there is a “fragility within some of the players” and that they were playing within themselves. Noticing their heads dropped as soon as they conceded the opening goal.

West Brom vs QPR Best Bet

West Brom will be delighted to get back to playing at the Hawthorns. The Baggies have won 10 of their last 12 games on home soil and conceded just once! Across the whole season only champions elect Burnley have a better defensive home record. With QPR’s form so bad we don’t really need to break down home and away results. However, it would be remiss not to mention they have lost their last four road trips whilst shipping a whopping 13 goals. Only Blackpool have conceded more times in the second tier than Rangers’ 62.

  • Selection: West Brom -0.75 Asian Handicap (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.83 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 7/10
