We’re back with more Championship best bets this midweek. There is a full set of Championship fixtures in midweek across two days. We’ve got key matches at both ends of a Championship table that is taking shape fast. My three best bets take us to games in Norfolk, Berkshire and the Black Country.

This looks like an intriguing clash between two of the division’s most in-form teams. The Canaries have reeled off five successive wins. A sequence which has taken them from bottom of the league up to 2nd place. Last time out, Dean Smith’s side registered a convincing 3-0 win over Coventry at Carrow Road. Teemu Pukki ringing alarm bells around Championship defences as he finally scored his first of the season. While Josh Sargent bagged his fifth goal in as many games.
The Robins started their campaign in even worse fashion than Norwich. Kicking off the season with consecutive defeats. Now unbeaten in six Nigel Pearson has steered his side up to fourth. A 3-2 defeat of Blackburn at Ewood Park secured a fourth in their last five Championship matches. Although there is a note of caution ahead of this test. That victory was only their fourth away league win in 21 attempts.
Norwich have scored 10 goals in their recent run of wins and conceded just two. However, I am not convinced with the home team defensively. A poor Huddersfield side scored despite being reduced to 10 men for over 40 minutes. Millwall set out to defend and didn’t attack until 2-0 down with 15 minutes left.
A managerless Sunderland hit the frame of the goal twice and forced more than one piece of last-ditch defending. Only two sides have scored fewer goals than Birmingham. But the Blues found a way past Tim Krul. With Coventry denied a goal by a contentious late offside flag. Before Viktor Gyökeres saw a glorious one-on-one opportunity well saved.
The league’s joint top scorers are unlikely to be so profligate. Tommy Conway has scored six goals in all competitions this season. As a result, the 20-year-old has been rewarded with a first international call-up with Scotland Under-21s. Also leaving the impressive Antoine Semenyo waiting for his first start as a result.
At the other end, only Hull and Middlesborough have conceded more times. On their travels, the men from Ashton Gate have seen both teams score in all four games. With both sides’ strength of attack and fragility in defence, I expect that run to be extended at Carrow Road.

Reading are without doubt the surprise package of the Championship’s opening stanzas. Many a well-respected pundit’s tip for the drop Paul Ince has guided his side to third. The Royals bounced back from a 4-0 drubbing at Bramall Lane by defeating Stoke last time out. In doing so they continued their 100% home record in the league this term. In a massive boost for the home side Lucas Joao completed his first 90 minutes of the campaign. The influential 29-year-old scored both goals.
Sunderland have made their best start to a Championship season since they won it under Mick McCarthy back in 2003-04. This season’s record of three wins, two draws, three defeats exactly matches the start made 19 years ago. New Black Cats manager Tony Mowbray suffered a disappointing return to Middlesbrough last time out. Losing the Tees-Wear Derby by the only goal.
I have been a big fan of Sunderland this season. However the loss of the inspirational Ross Stewart to a thigh injury for several weeks is a massive blow. In his absence at the Riverside Stadium, they looked a pale imitation of the vibrant attacking force I had seen previously. Coupled with Reading’s impressive start to the campaign, particularly at home, I am siding with the hosts. Getting 1.91 for a home win draw no bet is a fantastic bet.

The Baggies are the league’s draw specialists. Six stalemates from their opening eight fixtures leave Steve Bruce’s men languishing down in 16th place. However last time out they were grateful for Brandon Thomas-Asante’s debut 98th-minute equaliser. West Brom’s 88 chances created is the third highest in the division. Only 2nd placed Norwich (126) have taken more than their 120 shots. With 45 of those on target only league leaders, Sheffield United have more (46).
In their last outing, Birmingham became the first side to score a goal against Preston. Ending Freddie Woodman’s incredible run of seven successive clean sheets. The Blues gratefully ending a run of three successive defeats with a 1-0 victory. That win lifted John Eustace’s men out of the bottom three. It has been a predictably tough start to the season for a club whose proposed takeover is hanging in the balance.
It is impossible to side with this West Brom side winning a game currently. Despite all the impressive data they have still fallen behind in six of their eight games. Opening the scoring just once, a game they went on to win 5-2.
Birmingham also have the ability to dig in and make things awkward for any opponent. Losing by more than one goal on just one occasion so far. Which makes the corner market for the home side very appealing. They have taken 56 flag kicks so far. An average of exactly seven per game. At the Hawthorns that rises to an incredible 10.5. Taking 12 twice and nine twice also hitting eight when these two sides met here last season.
Best odds as at 09:00 September 12th 2022. Odds may now differ.
