Championship Best Bets: March 10th-11th

We are back with more Championship best bets ahead of this weekend’s action. Just three midweek fixtures but with implications at both ends of the table. Sheffield United used their game in hand wisely. A 1-0 win at Reading opened up a seven-point gap to Middlesbrough in 3rd.

West Brom edged past a spirited Wigan side to close the gap to the Championship play-offs places to four points. Huddersfield’s goalless draw with Bristol City was enough to lift them off the foot of the table on goal difference.

Three games go under the microscope, with a best bet in each.

Preston vs Cardiff Preview

Friday, March 10th, 15:00 (UK)

Preston travelled to Watford last weekend and came away with another hard-earned point. A result which transpired to be the final nail in the coffin for Slaven Bilic. The Croatian becoming the latest managerial casualty at Vicarage Road. Before being relieved of his duties Bilic had time to describe North End. Declaring that Preston are “a good defending side. They know how to frustrate you, how to keep the ball, how to waste time.” Few who have seen Ryan Lowe’s side this term would argue!

Cardiff handed Bristol City their first defeat of 2023 when winning the 100th Severnside derby on Saturday. Moving six points clear of the relegation zone in the process. Sabri Lamouchi has engineered an impressive upturn in results. With the Bluebirds winning three of their last four games. A sequence built on a rock-solid defence.

Preston vs Cardiff Best Bet

Preston’s goalless stalemate with Watford was their third in four games and a league-high ninth of the campaign. No side has scored fewer goals at home than the Lillywhites 12.

For their part, Cardiff are the Championship’s lowest scorers. The Bluebirds have managed just 27 goals in 35 games. With only 12 coming when on their travels.

Understandably the under 2.5 goals line is priced prohibitively so I am taking a look at the opening 45 minutes instead.

North End have managed just seven first-half goals at Deepdale this term. Failing to hit the back of the net in six of their last seven home games.

Seven of Cardiff’s last nine road trips have been goalless at the interval. With the Bluebirds scoring only once in the opening half of their last 10 away games.

Six of the last eight league meetings between these two sides have been 0-0 at the break. The other two games saw the home side on each occasion take in a 1-0 lead.

  • Selection: Under 0.75 first half goal line (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 2.05 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 6/10

Swansea vs Middlesbrough Preview

Saturday, March 11th, 15:00 (UK)

Russell Martin was sent to the stands as he watched his side slump to another defeat last weekend. The 1-0 loss at Luton was a third defeat in the last four games and sees the Swans now down in a lowly 17th place. Seemingly too far adrift of the playoff places. Despite losing the game Martin praised his side’s performance. Highlighting the energy, intensity, fight and aggressive mentality they showed. Even so it is now one win in the last eight league games and just three in the last 19. As a result the natives are getting restless.

In contrast, Middlesbrough once again bounced back from a rare negative result. Handing out a 5-0 drubbing to Reading at the Riverside last weekend. Making it 43 points collected under Michael Carrick since his arrival at the end of October. Only runaway leaders Burnley have collected more during that time frame.

Swansea vs Middlesbrough Best Bet

Boro’s march up the table has been relentless. A march which shows no signs of slowing down. The 5-0 win over Reading was their biggest-ever Championship victory. While goal machine Chuba Akpom became the first Middlesbrough player to score 20 goals since 1990. With confidence oozing and a laser focus on closing the gap on Sheffield United Carrick’s side will have too much firepower for their hosts.

  • Selection: Middlesbrough to Win (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 2.20 (Coral)
  • Stakes: 8/10

West Brom vs Huddersfield Preview

Saturday, March 11th, 15:00 (UK)

The Baggies enjoyed a return to home comforts in midweek. Recording a 1-0 success over Wigan to keep their playoff hopes alive. Four successive defeats away from the Hawthorns stalled their progress up the table. But a second fixture on home soil against a side in the relegation zone this week provides the perfect opportunity to close the gap to 6th which currently stands at four points. This will be Carlos Corberán’s first league meeting against the side he guided to the play-off final last May.

Neil Warnock has vowed to “keep on going” as his side picked up a point at home to Bristol City in midweek. It was a good response to the weekend drubbing at the hands of Coventry. A consecutive 4-0 loss. Also giving the Terriers the mental boost of lifting them off the foot of the table. But with a six-point gap to safety and a daunting run of fixtures ahead, the odds are stacked against the 74-year-old manager and his team.

West Brom vs Huddersfield Best Bet

Deja-vu? This is certainly a near-identical fixture to the one West Brom overcame on Tuesday. The defeat of Wigan was their ninth win from 10 home games. Once again, it was accompanied by a clean sheet.

Huddersfield have the lowest points tally away from home in the league this term. Picking up a meagre 10 points from their 17 road trips. Losing their last three away Championship games “to-nil” conceding eight times in the process. The Terriers have scored in just one of the last six games and none of the last three. With Warnock losing his only away game so far with the club 4-0 at Burnley.

  • Selection: West Brom to Win to Nil (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 2.20 (Coral)
  • Stakes: 6/10

Odds via bet365 and Coral as at 01:25 March 10th 2023. Odds may now differ.
