Championship Best Bets: Tuesday, October 18th

We’ve got Championship best bets this midweek. As Sunday signalled the end of one game week, so Tuesday heralds the beginning of another. It is, of course, the mad world of the English Championship.

In this article:

Norwich vs Luton Preview

Tuesday, October 18th, 19:45 (UK)

Just three points separate new leaders Burnley from Reading who occupy the final playoff spot in 6th. Following a nine-game unbeaten run, Norwich have now lost consecutive games and sit 3rd. A solitary win in five will be a huge concern for Dean Smith after a strong start to the season. Especially with games at the only two sides above them coming in succession over the next seven days.

In contrast to their hosts, the Hatters arrive in Norfolk on the back of a six-game unbeaten run. They’re up to 7th place after an impressive 3-1 victory over a QPR who visited Kenilworth Road undefeated in five games themselves. After defeat to Huddersfield in the play-off semi-finals last season Nathan Jones knows three points for his team at Carrow Road would see them end MD16 in the top six for the first time this term. Having won three of their last four league road trips, Luton will certainly travel in good heart.

Norwich vs Luton Best Bet

This game could go either way and I am avoiding predicting the result at full time. Instead, my focus is on corners. The Canaries’ last six league games have seen a total of 72 flag kicks taken. An average of exactly 12 per game. While Luton’s away games have seen only slightly fewer. A total of 68 at 11.33 per fixture. Across those combined 12 games only one has failed to hit at least 10 corners. Two Norwich games have seen exactly 10 with the remaining nine all having 11 or more.

  • Selection: Over 10 Asian Total Corners
  • Best Odds: 1.90 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 7/10

Stoke vs Rotherham Preview

Tuesday, October 18th, 19:45 (UK)

Stoke welcome Rotheram on Tuesday night looking for a third successive win. Alex Neil celebrated back-to-back wins for his new club at one of his former clubs at the weekend. Goals from Will Smallbone and Tyrese Campbell in eight second-half minutes were enough to comfortably get the better of Preston at Deepdale. The Potters will now look for another victory to close the current three-point gap to the playoffs.

Visitors, Rotherham also achieved a first at the weekend. New manager Matt Taylor recorded his first win in his third game in charge. The Millers’ boss described the 2-1 defeat of Huddersfield as “the most consistent performance we have had since I came in.” Now the former Exeter man will be looking to secure the first three points on the road for his new club. They will need to improve on a record of just one goal scored on their travels for that to happen.

Stoke vs Rotherham Best Bet

It is the corner market that interests me again here. Stoke have been racking up some impressive numbers since the arrival of Alex Neil. The Potters have taken 50 in total across just eight games at an average of 6.25. The impressive thing is the consistency with only once dipping below six flag kicks. They have hit six in six of those eight matches with the two against Burnley the anomaly but 12 when hosting Swansea. For their part, Rotherham have only taken 13 across their five road trips 3, 3, 1, 3 and 3. I was surprised to see the Asian Handicap for corners set at -1.

  • Selection: Stoke -1 Asian handicap corners (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.95 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 8/10

West Brom vs Bristol City Preview

Tuesday, October 18th, 20:00 (UK)

West Brom predictably won their first game post-Steve Bruce as they defeated Reading 2-0 on Saturday. That win under the stewardship of Richard Beale was enough to lift the Baggies out of the relegation zone. The interim manager rightly pointed out that his side now “need to get on a run and pick up points fast”. Despite their troubles and lowly position, the home side have been hard to beat. Drawing a league-high eight of their 14 league games.

Bristol City could provide the perfect opponent to continue that upward trajectory. A 2-1 home defeat to poor travellers Millwall was a fifth loss in seven outings. A dismal run of form has seen Nigel Pearson’s side slide from play-off contenders to just five places above the relegation zone. The first job for the Robins will be to quieten a bouncing, remotivated Hawthorns.

West Brom vs Bristol City Best Bet

West Brom have an enviable array of attacking talent. Highlighted by there only being five sides who have scored more goals in the Championship this season. One of those five sides are the visitors who have netted 23 times this term. Only the top two have scored more. Their downfall has been in defence. Shipping an alarming 24 times making them the second leakiest defence in the league. The Robins have conceded three times in three of their last five road trips, shipping twice in the other two games. A league-high six of their seven away games have seen over 2.5 goals. With the forward talent on display here this game is primed to add to that tally.

  • Selection: Over 2.5 goals (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.75 (Unibet)
  • Stakes: 8/10

Best odds available as at 20:45 on October 17th 2022. Odds may now differ.
