Championship Best Bets: Wednesday, October, 5th

It’s not all about the European action which is why we’ve got Championship best bets this Wednesday. Another enthralling schedule of Championship fixtures have just ended, and here we are, straight into a midweek offering in the second tier. What’s not to love about that? Watford, Burnley and Hull are the destinations for Wednesday’s match-ups, with three new-ish faces in the dugout in all three fixtures.

Watford vs Swansea Preview

Wednesday, October 5th, 19:45 (UK)

Wednesday evening has two sides locking horns who should saunter into midweek action with a spring in their step. In the away dressing room, Swansea will be buoyed after an 89th-minute Michael Obafemi strike downed West Brom at The Hawthorns. The Baggies had a penalty saved at 2-2 just five minutes before, compounding the anguish for Steve Bruce and WBA support in the Midlands.

In the home corner, Slaven Bilić got off to the best possible start in Watford’s dugout. Back in the Championship with a wealth of talent at his disposal and a 4-0 win on the books – could it get any easier? However, an easy ride will likely not materialise in the Watford hot seat. Bilić will be acutely aware of what’s expected and what’s waiting for him if he doesn’t impress. For now, though, The Hornets look in good shape if their visit to Stoke is anything to go by.

Hassane Kamara proved he’s levels above the Championship, again, with a robust defensive showing propping up a decisiveness in forward areas. Ismaila Sarr profited for the opener from a sumptuous Kamara cross and nearly did so again with another first-half delivery from the left-back. But, in the end, it could have been six or seven for Watford against a Stoke City side who were lacklustre at the back and proved devoid of a cutting edge to trouble Watford.

Watford vs Swansea Best Bet

The depth of Watford’s forward line should give Championship managers sleepless nights, and I fear there could be more of the same for a Swansea City eleven that has picked up three impressive victories in the last four.

If the hosts do now kick on under Bilić, the 1.90 to win presents a reasonable price. However, considering the capabilities of Swansea and a potential purple patch rearing its head in Wales, a goal is the least they should be conjuring here. Russell Martin’s Swans scored in eight Championship outings this season as Joël Piroe eyes what would be his fifth goal in seven games at Vicarage Road.

For the proposed selection, utilise bet365’s bet builder function to lock in their Early Payout offer on Watford to win the game alongside the BTTS pick.

  • Selection: Watford Win & BTTS
  • Best Odds: 4.00 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 5/10

Burnley vs Stoke Preview

Wednesday, October 5th, 19:45 (UK)

Following on from wanting to get behind a team that put Stoke City to the sword on Saturday, the focus now switches to a Burnley outfit that’ll welcome the Potters under the lights in Greater Manchester. The 0-4 loss at home was the most significant defeat since Stoke dropped into the Championship in 2018. The last time we saw such a scoreline in Stoke was at the hands of Chelsea, who struck four goals in Stoke in a Premier League fixture in 2017.

That’s not a good indictment for Alex Neil’s early start to life in a new version of red and white. One win in five matches is far from the start the former Sunderland gaffer would have hoped for, as Burnley away represents one of the most demanding Championship tasks for a faltering Stoke ensemble appearing defensively questionable at present.

Burnley have been victims of not being able to see the game out in three of their last four fixtures. The Bristol City win aside in their previous home game, Cardiff, Preston, and WBA on the road have all seen a response from the hosts after Burnley works an opening in the match. Two of which, in Cardiff and versus West Brom, ushered in 90th-minute equalisers over the line. It’s an unwelcome trait Vincent Kompany will want rid of, with the Bristol City win also witness to a quick reply from a visiting, goal-centred Robins eleven.

Burnley vs Stoke Best Bet

Now back at Turf Moor and keen to right a few wrongs, Stoke City fans may fear the worst after the performance on the weekend. Considering Burnley have lost just once all season against a Watford side that rode their luck, the prospect of The Potters clinching three points is slim.

That being said, The Potters sit fourth in the shots per90 rankings this term. The 13.45 total shows their eagerness to work the keeper from a forward line with real finishing quality in Dwight Gayle and Manchester City loanee Liam Delap.

Don’t write the Potters off entirely, but Burnley will be a tough nut to crack. Maybe too tough, in the end. At the time of writing, Burnley for the straight win was my go-to selection. Yet, with money flooding in for the home team, that price soon went. So, to squeeze more life out of the tie from a price perspective, including over 1.5 goals feels like a relatively safe addition to a match-up featuring a Stoke City defence at sixes and sevens. Although Burnley matches are not usually blessed with goals, over 1.5 has landed in 9/11 this term, including the previous eight on the trot.

  • Selection: Burnley Win & Over 1.5 Goals
  • Best Odds: 2.15 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 10/10

Hull City vs Wigan Preview

Wednesday, October 5th, 19:45 (UK)

Hull City are the worst form team in the division, ranked 20th from the last five games with five consecutive losses. That has prompted a change in the dugout with Shota Arveladze, who averaged just 1.10 points per game in the Championship, given his marching orders before the weekend’s game against Luton.

Interim boss Andy Dawson couldn’t stop the rot against the Hatters. Zero shots on target to Luton’s five encouraged a 0-2 scoreline on Saturday to add to the below-par Arveladze reign. It’s difficult to back any team in such a rut. Given there isn’t a new manager making his arrival imminently and Dawson has little time on the training pitch alongside rest and recovery days before Wigan’s visit, we could be in for more of the same here.

Hull City vs Wigan Best Bet

Taking a Hull win out of the equation, we can look to get any other result in a bet365 bet builder. Wigan or Draw, plus over 1.5 goals in the match, comes out at a backable 1.95 price. Only Sheffield United and Burnley have lost fewer games than The Latics’ two this term. Eight of Wigan’s opening ten matches have won the Wigan Double Chance approach to the game, with four coming as wins and four where they shared the spoils. For a newly-promoted Championship side, that’s extremely impressive.

Over 1.5 goals has landed in 10/11 Hull matches this campaign, with the only 0-0 blip coming in the shape of Preston, which isn’t a surprise. Amusingly, it’s a similar story for Wigan, with a 0-0 showing against Preston adding to two 1-0 scorelines versus Birmingham and Reading to make it 7 in 10 games where the over 1.5 goals punt banked.

  • Selection: Wigan or Draw Double Chance & Over 1.5 Goals
  • Best Odds: 2.05 (William Hill)
  • Stakes: 10/10

Odds via bet365 and William Hill as at 11:00, October 4th, 2022. Odds may now differ.
