Burnley vs Hull Preview
England, Championship, Tuesday, August 16th, 19:45 (UK)
The Vincent Kompany revolution is well under way at Turf Moor. 13 members of the old guard have departed. A total of ten new faces in the building. Predominantly young, hungry talent from the UK and Belgium. A philosophy of possession-based football is the new look for the Clarets. Perfectly illustrated in their sole home fixture so far against Luton. A contest in which they had a 71% share of the ball. Having just one shot on target in that game will be a concern. But at least they made it count, being the equaliser in the 1-1 draw with the defiant Hatters.
Hull’s ambitious owner Acun Ilicali also has his sights set on the upper echelons of the Championship. The Tigers have made some very interesting additions this summer. Although recruiting the likes of Oscar Estupinan and Jean Seri were overshadowed by the sale of star man Keane Lewis-Potter.
Burnley vs Hull Best Bet
Hull picked up a valuable point at Preston in their only away game so far. But the 0-0 scoreline disguised the fact the hosts dominated the contest. The Lilywhites fired 20 shots and hit the post. The xG of 2.11 v 0.21 highlighting the gulf between the two sides. With the extra quality that Burnley possess, they won’t show such profligacy. Attackers Jay Rodriguez and Scott Twine have been missed but are nearing full fitness. Their return will enable the home side to cover the -1 Asian Handicap.
- Selection: Burnley -1 Asian Handicap
- Best Odds: 2.12 (Unibet)
- Stakes: 7/10
Norwich vs Huddersfield Preview
England, Championship, Tuesday, August 16th, 19:45 (UK)
The Canaries have lived up to their reputation as slow starters. Shoots of recovery have started to show with confidence beginning to return. This has been helped by new additions to the middle of the pitch. Marcelino Núñez and Gabriel Sara have arrived from South America. They bring a refreshing mix of style, endeavour and swagger. More locally sourced Liam Gibbs has also caught the eye. Losing their opening fixture to opponents producing 0.09 takes some doing. As did drawing their only home game despite having 70% of the ball and 22 shots.
Huddersfield look a shell of the side that were losing play-off finalists in May. Mainly because they are. Carlos Corberan walked away. A move which reeked of leaving while his stock was high, fearing for the season ahead. Key duo Harry Toffolo and Lewis O’Brien joined Wembley conquerors Nottingham Forest.
The Terriers’ first road trip of the season was effectively out of their reach by half-time. They were going in at the break 2-0 down at expected strugglers Birmingham City. For a side that mustered two shots with neither on target in their opening fixture the comeback never looked on.
Norwich vs Huddersfield Best Bet
The appointment of Danny Schofield from within looks an error. The former Professional Development Coach doesn’t seem up to the task of filling Corberan’s shoes. Systems have been changed already. There appears to be no continuity in terms of style or attitude on the pitch. Visiting a side that is starting to look worthy ante-post title favourites is not an ideal fixture. Dean Smith has squad depth the envy of the division just at a time fixtures are coming thick and fast. This is unlikely to be a repeat of the 7-0 thrashing of two seasons ago. But Norwich will comfortably cover the -1 Asian Handicap.
- Selection: Norwich -1 Asian Handicap (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.16 (10Bet)
- Stakes: 8/10

West Brom vs Cardiff Preview
England, Championship, Wednesday, August 17th, 20:00 (UK)
West Brom have impressed me in the early stages of the season. The outstanding acquisitions of Jed Wallace and John Swift set the tone. Their only action at the Hawthorns saw a 1-1 draw with Watford. Not a bad result on paper. On the pitch it was a game the Baggies dominated for large periods. Emphasised by their xG of 3.06. As Steve Bruce stated he “couldn’t have wished for a better performance”.
Cardiff have not impressed at all. The Bluebirds’ opening day win came with an xG of 0.09. Away from home their performance was so bad it drew an apology from Steve Morison. A set piece goal with one other attempt on target. Their attacking process equating an xG of 0.27. As a result, they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at one of the pre-season relegation favourites Reading.
West Brom v Cardiff Best Bet
West Brom keep missing a lot of chances. But at least they are creating chances, unlike the visitors. The quality of the home side in the final third is frightening at this level. At the time of writing, Cardiff have conceded the most fouls in the league. They have also collected most cards. A recipe for disaster with Jed Wallace on set pieces for the opposition. This all points towards a convincing home win.
