Here we have our Chelsea vs West Ham prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview courtesy of Scott Thornton as we prepare for a bust weekend of Premier League action.
Chelsea are in action against Tottenham midweek. Mauricio Pochettino’s side needs a perfect end to the campaign if they are to salvage a place in European competition. It’s been a tumultuous campaign for the Blues and it’s unclear whether Poch will be at the club next season. David Moyes is very unlikely to be at West Ham next season, so he will be looking to end his tenure on a positive note.
England, Premier League, Sunday, May 5th, 14:00 (UK)
West Ham beat Chelsea 3-1 when these sides met in the reverse fixture but heading to Stamford Bridge is a much tougher proposition. The Blues’ home form has been key in their climbing out of the bottom half of the Premier League. Mauricio Pochettino will be keen to ensure their home patch is a fortress as he looks to get the fans back on side just weeks after the 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal.
Chelsea are unbeaten in their last seven home matches across all competitions. Their last game at Stamford Bridge was an emphatic 6-0 win over Everton with this piece being written before their clash with Tottenham. They have won seven of their last nine home matches in the Premier League. The Blues have also won their last three matches against West Ham at this ground.
The Hammers are without a win in their last five matches across all competitions. They have won just two of their league away matches this calendar year. The 5-2 defeat they suffered at the hands of Crystal Palace in their last game on the road was a huge concern so a home win looks the way to go here.
This game also promises goals. These sides’ defences have been shaky of late to sat the least. They have conceded the 5th and 4th most goals per game in the Premier League respectively. Chelsea are conceding an average of 1.79 and West Ham opponents are averaging 1.86 so our second bet is for both teams to score and over 2.5 goals in the match.
Chelsea matches have seen the third most goals in England’s top flight with an average of 3.7 per game. This rises to 3.75 if we only include the data from their league matches played at Stamford Bridge. This bet has won in five of their last six matches played in front of their own fans across all competitions. Those matches have seen 5.5 goals on average.
West Ham’s away matches have seen the most goals in the league with an average of 3.88. This is 0.10 more per game than Luton’s matches, who rank 2nd in that regard. Both teams have scored and there has been at least three goals in their last four away games in the Premier League.
When Cole Palmer made the switch to Chelsea in pursuit of regular game time, few would have predicted just how much of an impact he would have. He has been the shining light in an otherwise dark season for the Blues. The attacking midfield looks set to be a crucial cog in the Chelsea machine as they look to return to the summit of English and European football.
Cole Palmer may be a midfielder but he has scored the second-most goals in the Premier League at the time of writing. His 20 goals and nine assists in 29 league appearances indicate just how much excellent he has been
The former Manchester City player has is one goal behind Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot. He has scored 10 goals in his last six Premier League matches ahead of the Tottenham match. His non-penalty xG of 0.36 per 90 minutes puts him in the top 8% when compared with all other attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe’s top five leagues. Palmer has also proven to be Mr. Reliable from the penalty spot so that has boosted his goal numbers even further.

Like many managers this season, Mauricio Pochettino has had to deal with a plethora of injuries. Fernandez, Sterling, Chukwuemeka, Chilwell, Colwill, Nkunku, Lavia, Ugochukwu, James and Fofana will all miss Sunday’s match. Thiago Silva is also dealing with a muscle injury so it is unclear whether he will ever play for the club again.
David Moyes’ has no such worries. He will likely be able to name a full-strength starting eleven with Mavrapanos set to return very soon. George Earthy suffered a concussion but should be available. He came off the bench against Fulham but has spent most of the season with the u21s.
Chelsea possible starting lineup: Petrovic; Chalobah, Disasi, Badiashile, Cucurella; Caicedo, Gallagher, Palmer; Madueke, Mudryk, Jackson
West Ham possible starting lineup: Areola; Coufal, Zouma, Ogbonna, Palmeiri; Soucek, Alvarez, Paqueta; Bowen, Kudus, Antonio
