Scott Thornton is back with his Crystal Palace vs Newcastle prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview ahead of a busy week in the Premier League.
Newcastle are ahead of Manchester United in the league and have their sights set on qualifying for Europe once again. Any lingering doubts over Palace being dragged into a relegation battle has vanished in recent weeks. The Eagles are now eleven points clear of the bottom three and any dangers of dropping into the Championship.
In this article:
England, Premier League, Wednesday, March 24th, 20:00 (UK)
Crystal Palace were at their very best as they hammered West Ham 5-2 at the weekend. Oliver Glasner was able to call upon a front three of Mateta, Eze and Olise and they had a huge impact. The Hammers had no answer for the creative spark provided by the latter pairing. They combined for a total of 149 touches of the ball despite neither of them playing the full 90 minutes.
The Eagles have looked menacing in their four matches at Selhurst Park under the new manager. They have scored 11 goals in those matches and can cause problems for a resurgent Newcastle here. Palace managed to score twice in their recent home match against City despite having just 25% of the ball. They should have more of a chance to strut their stuff here.
Newcastle matches have seen the most goals in the Premier League with an average of 3.78 per game. Both teams have found the net in five of their last six league matches on the road. Those away games have seen an average of 4.33 goals so expect a glut of goals once again.
An end-to-end fixture would also lend itself nicely to corner bets. There were 14 corners when Crystal Palace played at St. James’s Park earlier in the season. The last time these sides went toe-to-toe at this ground there was a total of 18 corners, well above the line set by the bookmakers ahead of Wednesday night’s match.
Crystal Palace matches under Glasner have seen an average of 11.12 corners per game. The Eagles’ league matches overall this season have seen an average of 10.9 corners, which is just above the required mark for this tip to win. There have been 11 corners or more in five of Palace’s seven matches with the Glasner at the helm.
Newcastle matches in the league have seen an average of 10.03 corners per game. There were 19 corners in their most recent game against Tottenham. Their last match on the road was at Craven Cottage and there were 17 corners in that one. We could see a sky-high corner count once again with these two sides in good form.
Michael Olise looked back to his best in the win over West Ham. The winger was out for a couple of months due to injury but returned to the team when Crystal Palace faced Manchester City on the 6th of April. He has flourished under Glasner and will be looking to finish the season strongly with several clubs rumoured to be interested in his signature this summer.
Olise scored and assisted a goal in Crystal Palace’s last match. Those contributions mean he now has seven goals and four assists in 14 Premier League appearances this season. His average of 0.35 non-penalty goals scored per 90 minutes played put him in the 84th percentile when compared with all other attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues.
The Frenchman is averaging 5.04 touches in the opposition penalty box this season. His ability to operate in tight spaces and exceptional ball control make him difficult to shackle. He hasn’t made an impact in recent meetings with Newcastle but Palace look a far more attacking outfit under Glasner.
Crystal Palace vs Newcastle Prediction odds via bet365 as at 07:40, April 22nd, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Palace’s return to form has coincided with Eze and Olise coming back. The win over West Ham was just the sixth time that the pair have started together this season. Despite the recent injury boosts, they are still unable to call upon Guehi, Doucoure and Lerma ahead of this fixture.
Newcastle have been harder by injury than most this season. Willock, and Trippier aren’t expected to be fit for this one. Wison, Almiron and Miley won’t return to the team until May. Botman and Lascelles both have cruciate ligament injuries so it’s difficult to put a timeline on their return.
Crystal Palace possible starting lineup:
Henderson; Clyne, Andersen, Richards; Mnos, Ahamada, Hughes, Mitchell; Olise, Eze, Mateta
Newcastle possible starting lineup:
Dubravka; Murphy, Krafth, Schar, Burn; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Anderson; Gordon, Isak, Barnes
