Mexico vs Poland Preview
World Cup Group C, Tuesday, November 22nd, 16:00
The later game in Group C is a pick ’em. It’s a fascinating clash between Mexico and Poland, a game in which I am not sure anyone can say with any confidence what is going to happen.
The South Americans defied all odds to escape a group featuring Germany, Sweden and South Korea in 2018 before Brazil cut their tournament short in the last 16.
Goals were lacking in their run to the knockouts with El Tri scoring only three times. The trend has continued in the four years since. Mexicans have only scored two or more goals on four occasions since then. They came against international minnows Guatemala, Suriname and in two games with Honduras.
Despite the firepower of Robert Lewandowski, the bookies clearly do not fancy a goal-laden clash with under 2.5 goals at 1.57.
The White and Reds are on an upward trajectory though, scoring 32 times in qualification and only losing to England and Hungary. That’s gone a long way to putting their disappointing Euro 2020 campaign in the past. They did not make it out of the group then and will be hoping for an improvement.

Given how closely the bookies have these pegged, and with goals expected to be of a premium, I have delved into the player card market. Krystian Bielik’s price appeals, despite being the shortest price of any player.

France will be hoping to buck the trend of the defending champions in the last three World Cups. Italy, Spain and Germany have all seen their title defences end early with group-stage exits in the last three tournaments.
Didier Deschamps’ chances of another world title have been dealt some huge blows with Christopher Nkunku, Presnel Kimpembe and Karim Benzema all ruled out of the competition.
The biggest misses will be N’golo Kante and Paul Pogba in central midfield The pair were pivotal in 2018 providing a perfect blend of skill and energy in Les Bleus’ engine room.
Nevertheless, the current holders should have enough to overcome Australia. The bookmarkers certainly think so pricing Deschamps’ side as 1.30 favourites.
The Socceroos laboured to qualification. They edged past Oman in their group before two play-off games to secure their spot in Qatar. Any result for Graham Arnold would be a real shock.
France vs Australia Best Bet
Given the gulf in pedigree between the sides, I was surprised to see Kylian Mbappe at a shade under evens to find the net on Tuesday.
PSG’s frontman has already bagged 28 times for his nation as he chases down strike partner Oliver Giroud’s record.
Benzema’s absence will be telling, however, there is a case that Mbappe plays his best football alongside Giroud anyway.
