David De Gea has been in focus for some fatal mistakes recently, which has only led to even more rumours about the Spaniard’s future, as the goalkeeper´s contract is expiring at the end of this season, although the club has a one year extension option.

We talked to the former Man United defender, Mikael Silvestre, who shared his thoughts on the goalkeeper.

In this article:

David De Gea can bounce back but he needs to do it fast

David De Gea once again came into focus against West Ham, with his brutal mistake on Benrahma´s goal. The Spaniard has been linked with a move away for a long time and now that discussion is just being even more relevant for the critics of the goalkeeper.

“I think he can bounce back from his mistakes. Every player can do that but it’s harder for a goalkeeper than for an outfield player.”

“As an outfield player you will have more opportunities to bounce back but as a goalkeeper there is always a risk that you will concede a goal when the opponent has the ball.”

That being said, Silvestre believes that the Spanish shot stopper has the mental capability to recover but he will have to be quick. The Red Devils are in their worst form this season and if De Gea doesn’t recover, it can prove to be extremely costly for Erin ten Hag’s cohorts.

“But I think that David De Gea has the mental resources to do it. But he needs to do it fast because it’s important for the outfield players to trust their goalkeeper and with a goalkeeper that doesn’t make that many mistakes a team will be much more confident.”

“The goalkeeper is the last man standing and it needs to be certain that he is not making these kinds of mistakes. Otherwise it will give the team a bit of fragility when you have doubts about your goalkeeper.”

“I think he can do it but it’s very important that he stops very quickly to have these kinds of performances.”

“Man United are not on top at the moment and they are facing teams who are fighting a lot. Almost for their life, you know.”

“He needs to make a statement now and come back to his best as fast as possible.”

Dean Hendersen still has to grow as a leader

According to Silvestre, Dean Henderson is not ready to be the starting goalkeeper for Man United and the former French international points out a very important area, where the Englishman has room for improvement.

“At this point of time I still think Dean Henderson is not No. 1 for United for where they want to go.”

“He has to continue and still grow as a leader. It is really important for a goalkeeper, not just being good technically. You have to show a presence and be a big, big leader in the squad.”

Man United´s team is designed to play in the Champions League

Silvestre makes it crystal clear that there aren’t room for more slip ups if The Red Devils wants to qualify for the Champions League, as he also says that Man United´s team is designed to play in the Champions League, which is why it is going to be a massive blow for the club if they are missing out on the top four.

“Liverpool can get the Champions League spot, if there is another slip up or two from Man United. Man United´s form right now is their worst throughout this whole season.”

“Right now is the money time in the Premier League. Every team is fighting for important places and Liverpool has a very good dynamic right now.”

“Manchester United has been losing games recently, which is a big concern for them.”

“It will be a massive blow for Manchester United because it is a big opportunity to continue the rebuilding of the club. The squad is designed to play in the Champions League, that’s what their players were signed for. “

“They have been in a Champions League position for a long time now, so it is important to stay that and secure that position for the next season.”
