Germany, Bundesliga, Sunday, February 25th, 14:30 (UK)
Dortmund slipped a distant 17 points behind Bundesliga leaders Leverkusen following a 1-1 draw at Wolfsburg at the weekend. Furthermore 3rd placed Frankfurt opened a five point gap with RB Leipzig closing to within a point of the hosts here who sit in the final Champions League qualifying spot.
On the brightside BVB remain unbeaten in 2024 with four wins and two draws. However focus returns to the Champions League and a Tuesday night clash with PSV ahead of this return to domestic action.
Visitors Hoffenheim have seen their form fall off a cliff and need to arrest an alarming slide to get anything from this trip to Signal Iduna Park. A 1-0 weekend defeat at home to Union Berlin saw them lose further ground on the European places and sit in 9th six points adrift of Frankfurt.
Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side have only one victory to their name in their last 13 league outings and are winless in eight. The American coach will be looking to take advantage of any Champions League hangover from the home side to ignite an upturn in fortunes for his men.
One player who can be the driving force for that pursuit of a positive result is Anton Stach. The midfielder has started all but four of his club’s fixtures this season and his desire to get on the scoresheet has caught my eye.
The 25-year-old had three shots in Saturday’s loss to Union which followed two attempts at goal in his last start versus Werder Bremen and four in the home game with Heidenheim prior to that. His last 11 starts have seen him fire in 24 shots with at least two in seven of those including in his side’s trip to Bayern Munich.
Dortmund vs Hoffenheim Prediction odds via bet365 as at 09:00, February 19th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Borussia Dortmund’s Niclas Füllkrug has been directly involved in three goals in each of his last two Bundesliga home matches, a feat only achieved by two Dortmund players since records began in 2004-05: Raphaël Guerreiro in February/March 2023 and Erling Haaland in April 2022. Also, Füllkrug has only scored more BL goals against Bochum (6) than against TSG (5, incl. the opening goal against TSG on MD6 this season), and should be in the starting eleven from the off on the weekend.
After TSG Hoffenheim won their first five away games of the season, the Kraichgauers are now winless in their last six such games (D2 L4). TSG have conceded at least two goals in each of their last five away matches in the Bundesliga; six in a row would be a new club record in the top-flight.
TSG Hoffenheim’s man up top, Andrej Kramaric, has only scored more Bundesliga goals against Hertha BSC (12) than against Borussia Dortmund (9). The only time he has scored four goals in a BL match was against BVB (in the 4-0 win in Dortmund in June 2020). In slightly worrying news for the hosts, the Croatian should be starting from the off here.
Dortmund possible starting lineup:
Kobel, Ryerson, Sule, Schlotterbeck, Maatsen, Sabitzer, Can, Brandt, Reus, Sancho, Fullkrug.
Hoffenheim possible starting lineup:
Baumann, Kaderabek, Kabak, Grillitsch, Nsoki, Stach, Promel, Tohumcu, Kramaric, Bebou, Beier.
