Defeat in Der Klassiker last week saw Dortmund relinquish top spot to Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern Munich. Dortmund are still just two points behind the Bavarian giants, who face 4th-place Freiburg on Saturday afternoon.
After a blip which appeared to have taken them out of the title race, Union Berlin have got back on track with consecutive wins to nil. They took advantage of the top two playing each other last weekend by beating Stuttgart, which has closed the gap. Union are now two behind Dortmund and only four off Bayern coming into this match.
Losses in the DFB-Pokal heighten the importance of this match for both teams. Champions League qualification would be a massive success for Union, while Dortmund’s sole focus is on catching Bayern.
In their previous matchup this season, Union ran out 2-0 victors despite having under 23% possession. That win ended a run of three consecutive Dortmund victories in this matchup. Union have lost all three of their league matches at Signal Iduna Park, conceding 11 goals in the process and scoring just two.
Dortmund and Union have been the Bundesliga’s form teams after the World Cup, and Dortmund have been spectacular at home, winning their last seven in all competitions. Union have not won away from home in their last five overall.
