Seven Serie A teams are in action in Europe in mid-week, including AC Milan, who hosted PSG. Italian football expert Daniele Fisichella has focused his Early Bird Tips on two of them: the champions Napoli face Empoli on the back of a comfortable win against Salernitana, and Fiorentina play against Bologna in the ‘Derby dell’Appennino’.

It was another textbook win for Juventus in Firenze last Sunday: they took the lead early (thanks to Fabio Miretti’s first Serie A goal), then defended stoically and disrupted the hosts’ rhythm with a couple of counterattacks.
Max Allegri’s side earned their sixth consecutive clean sheet, the eighth of their Serie A campaign so far. Yet with only 17 goals scored (less than Atalanta and Fiorentina), the Bianconeri are within touching distance of leaders Inter Milan, who they’ll face at home after the international break.
The differences, technical and tactical, compared to last season are minimal: Juventus are playing pretty much with the same XI, but what matters most is that they’ve got seven points more than a year ago.
Cagliari are unbeaten in four games in all competitions, and, for the first time this season, they’re outside the relegation zone.
Ranieri is finding his best XI, and lately, Cagliari seems to get better as the games progress: only Napoli have scored more goals (seven) with players who came from the bench than the Sardinians (six goals).
However, they’ve only kept one away clean sheet (0-0 vs Torino) in six games so far, and considering Juve’s excellent record against lower-table sides (18 wins without conceding since last year), it’s hard to imagine this would be a high scoring match.

Napoli continues to be a shadow of the team that dominated Serie A (and in Europe, for large spells) last season. But at least they’re getting better results lately, especially against struggling sides.
They won four games against Udinese, Lecce, Verona and Salernitana, scoring 13 goals and conceding only one. Rudi Garcia’s team is extremely pragmatic. They keep the ball less compared to last season and prefer to play more directly: a tactic that, so far, is working against weaker oppositions.
The champions have the second-best attack in Serie A and are top for shots on goal, whereas Empoli’s goalkeepers are third for saves made so far (38).
The Tuscan club has lost all four games against top sides so far (Juventus, Inter, Roma and Atalanta), and on Monday, against Frosinone, they produced too little too late. Their leading scorer, Francesco Caputo (two goals so far), touched the ball only nine times during the whole match.
Napoli, who have already dropped eight points at the Maradona so far, can’t afford another slip. It might not be a vintage performance from the Azzurri, but I’d expect them to secure the win comfortably.

Fiorentina and Bologna are so close (not only geographically) but yet so far apart.
The visitors have just one more point in the table compared to La Viola, and both sides have improved their points tally compared to last season (+8 for Bologna, +7 for the hosts).
However, the clubs approach the ‘Derby dell’Appennino’ in a diametrically opposite mood.
Bologna are unbeaten in 10 games, their longest streak since 1979/1980, and, thanks to the 1-0 win over Lazio, have recorded their best-ever start of a Serie A campaign since 2002/2003.
Once again, they confirmed they’re organised, very good on the ball and creative up-front.
In 2023, Bologna are unbeaten in 12 games against the likes of Inter, Juventus, Napoli, Lazio, Atalanta, Roma, Milan and, of course, Fiorentina, who they beat 2-1 back in February.
La Viola, on the other hand, have now lost and failed to score in three consecutive Serie A games, something that has never happened in the previous two seasons under Vincenzo Italiano.
Against Juventus, they controlled the tempo but lacked lucidity. They ended up crossing the ball 43 times into the Bianconeri’s box but produced no real threat.
Frustration grew as Fiorentina kept crashing against the Juve wall. With 20 minutes to go, it was clear the hosts could not have scored even if the game had lasted all night.
This is a must-win game for last year’s Conference League finalists, who have only kept five clean sheets in 19 games in all competitions so far.
