AFCON, Sunday, January 14th, 17:00 (UK)
Mohamed Salah’s ability to weave through defences and create scoring opportunities from the flanks renders him a challenging adversary for retreating defenders. Equipped with exceptional finishing skills, Salah has netted 14 goals in the Premier League this season.
It’s currently 1.95 for him to score in the upcoming match, an implied odds probability of 51.3%, following his goal in Egypt’s warm-up friendly against Tanzania. Despite his assertive tone in the pre-tournament press conference, Salah typically allows his performance on the field to speak for itself.
Salah stands as the pivotal figure for his national team, and this tournament might be his final opportunity to clinch an international trophy. His tenure at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp has been marked by remarkable success. Renowned globally for his prolific goal-scoring, Salah will be aiming to put his stamp on the Asian Cup and his Egyptian national career further in this competition.
The two-time African footballer of the year again features heavily in our next prediction. As he is for Liverpool, Salah will present as his side’s go-to man in terms of attacking output. In the Premier League, he averages 0.74 xG per90 – a figure borne from 3.05 shots per90.
The weight of his country is on his shoulders, he’s Egypts leading hope of success, and he’s out to prove a point. So, you’d think he’s going to be heavily involved and finding himself in opportunities where can can pull the trigger with some success.
The ‘Win to Nil’ section of the bet highlights Mozambique’s lack of punch in forward areas. Mozambique haven’t managed to score in their last three meetings against Egypt. Egypt’s backline, marshalled by former West Bromwich Albion defender Ahmed Hegazy, should be confident of a shut-out here.
The contenders are poised to send a strong message in the opening game of the tournament, and we think they’ll do just that.
In recent matches, Egypt has consistently achieved victories with a margin of two goals or more in their past three games. Conversely, Mozambique hasn’t managed to register a goal in their last three direct confrontations with Egypt, as predicted in Tip 2.
The odds for the -1 Asian Handicap line, which means we’ll get at least our stake back if Egypt win, opened at 1.63 and hasn’t seen much movement since. Given that we think Egypt might run away with proceedings here if they hit the ground running, this feels like a relatively straightforward way into the competition.
Notably, though, it must be pointed out that AFCON is a notoriously low-scoring tournament, with the bigger nations rarely trouncing the lesser lights. Still, this is a price that should shorten as kick-off approaches.

Mo Salah played 90 minutes as Egypt beat Tanzania 2-0 in his country’s AFCON warm-up fixture. The Liverpool man took a penalty which rebounded off Tanzania’s keeper into the net. It goes down a penalty miss in the record books frustratingly for Salah. New Egypt coach Rui Vitoria deployed Salah in the midfield for the Tanzania fixture – a change from his usual position on the wing where he has been prolific
The upcoming tie against Mozambique is, Egypt will hope, the first of eight fixtures at the tournament if the final is reached.
