The Czech Republic are in a strong position in Group D. The 1-1 draw with Croatia last Friday keeps them top of the group and within touching distance of the knockout stage.
Anything other than a defeat will give top spot to the Czech Republic but qualification isn’t guaranteed. They’ll finish second if they lose and Scotland beat Croatia. They’ll finish third if they lose and Croatia beat Scotland and overcome the goal difference.
England’s chances are fairly similar. A win will give them top spot in the group and the prospect of an easier draw in the round of 16. Draw and they’ll finish second. Lose and they may drop down to third if Scotland secure a big win against Croatia in the other match.
It wouldn’t be the first time that England have lost this fixture. Gareth Southgate’s men went down 2-1 to the Czech Republic the last time they met. A late Zdenek Ondrasek goal secured three points for them.
But England have the better overall record. They won 5-0 in the reverse fixture at Wembley. England won 2-0 in a 1998 friendly match and drew 2-2 a decade later.
The previous matches in Group D may teach us a few things about how this one will go. One of the biggest differences between England and the Czech Republic so far is how often they see the ball. Gareth Southgate’s men have the highest average possession in the group while the Czech Republic have the lowest. The stats are 53.3% compared to 47.3%.
There is also a difference in how they use the ball. England completed 86.9% of their passes compared to 74.6% for the Czechs. That does not translate into goal scoring chances. England have had the lowest number of shots on target in Group D. The Czech Republic have had the most.
But Gareth Southgate’s men are still the favourites. England are 1.60 to secure the three points that will see them finish top in Group D. It’s 3.65 for a draw and the Czech Republic are out at 7.25 to secure a shock win at Wembley.

There is good value backing the Czech Republic here. They’ve impressed in their opening two matches while England have struggled. It’s been difficult for Gareth Southgate’s men to find the back of the net. A counter-attacking Czech Republic side will test them. Forward Patrik Shick won’t need a second invitation to score either.
Just don’t expect too many goals. Group D has the lowest average number of match goals of the six groups at Euro 2021. That may continue here.
