A lot has changed since then for both these sides. England, in particular, have had some serious player turnover. Over half of the 2018 World Cup squad hasn’t made the cut for this tournament. That includes several of the players who started that semi-final.
It was a necessary change for manager Gareth Southgate. Many players have emerged in the last few years. Some of these are now undroppable for England.
It’s a familiar matchup. England and Croatia met long before that World Cup semi-final in 2018. But this is only their second meeting in the European Championship. England beat Croatia 4-2 at Euro 2004 after a brace from a young Wayne Rooney.
Harry Kane now wears the number 9 shirt for England. The team’s captain and star man was their top scorer in qualifying. He got 14 goals and assisted another three. That was the most goal involvements of any player in qualifying.
The Three Lions will hope for the best from Kane. This match carries special significance in Group D. England and Croatia are the two top sides in the group. A win for either here will set them on the path to top spot.
Gareth Southgate’s men are the favourites to secure the three points at 1.66. It’s 3.65 for the sides to draw and 5.50 for Croatia to win.

We should see goals. Neither side is airtight at the back and both have quality moving forward. That means chances and Harry Kane rarely needs a second invitation. He was the best striker in qualifying and won the 2018 World Cup Golden Boot. It would be a surprise if Kane wasn’t amongst the top scorers in this competition.
But it’s unlikely that Croatia will get picked apart here. A +0.5 handicap falls in line with their excellent record in the opening fixture of this competition. It would also continue England’s troubling winless streak.
